ESO e AMOS firmano un contratto per i telescopi ausiliari del VLTI
Quest'immagine mostra un modello di un telescopio ausiliario durante il trasferimento da una stazione di osservazione all'altra. Il Transporter muove il telescopio attraverso una rete ferroviaria che collega tutte e 30 le stazioni. La ricollocazione è un'operazione complessa che prevede alcuni passaggi. Innanzitutto, il telescopio all'interno del rivestimento chiuso viene sganciato da terra e sollevato da morsetti che si trovano sul Trasportatore. I cavi elettrici della stazione vengono scollegati e l'alimentazione è fornita dal set di batterie di bordo. Il Transporter viene quindi sbloccato e spostato lateralmente in modo tale che la scatola ottica del relè Coudé possa essere sollevata dall'interno della stazione. Questa scatola è visibile nella foto dopo essere stata sollevata sul lato sinistro del Transporter. Il coperchio che protegge la stazione (l'ottagono bianco) viene quindi posizionato sopra la stazione. Successivamente, il Trasportatore viene spostato lungo le rotaie fino alla stazione scelta. Questo movimento può includere un passaggio a livello in cui le ruote del trasportatore vengono prima sollevate, quindi ruotate di 90° e nuovamente posizionate sui binari nella direzione perpendicolare. Quando si raggiunge la stazione desiderata, il coperchio della stazione viene aperto, l'ottica del relè Coudé viene abbassata all'interno della buca della stazione e il Telescopio e il Trasportatore sono ancorati alle rispettive basi. L'accuratezza di posizionamento dei vari meccanismi è così buona che non dovrebbe essere necessario alcun riallineamento locale, sebbene ciò possa essere fatto in remoto dalla sala di controllo prima della successiva osservazione. Durante la ricollocazione stessa, il controllo del Trasportatore viene eseguito localmente da un ricevitore da uno o due operatori.
