Prima immagine NTT della cometa Hale-Bopp dopo la congiunzione solare
Quest'immagine in falsi colori della cometa Hale-Bopp è la prima ad essere ottenuta con un importante telescopio astronomico dopo la recente congiunzione con il Sole. Al momento di questa osservazione, la cometa era situata nella costellazione meridionale del Sagittario e a soli 32 gradi dal Sole. Quest'osservazione piuttosto difficile è stata eseguita con il New Technology Telescope (NTT) dell'ESO da 3,5 metri nella mattina del 9 febbraio 1996 da Griet van de Steene (astronomo), Hernan Nunez (operatore del telescopio) e Gabriel Martin (operatore dello strumento) della squadra NTT a La Silla. I dati sono stati immediatamente trasferiti tramite collegamento satellitare al quartier generale dell'ESO a Garching, dove la successiva elaborazione delle immagini è stata effettuata da Hans Ulrich Kaeufl. Poiché la cometa era così vicina al Sole, doveva essere osservata nel cielo relativamente luminoso del mattino. Fu acquisita solo 10 gradi sopra l'orizzonte orientale, con un airmass non inferiore a 5,1. Tre esposizioni di 5 minuti ciascuna sono state realizzate mediante un filtro rosso e un CCD da 2000 x 2000 nello strumento EMMI multi-mode. L'immagine mostrata qui si basa su un flat-field da 5 minuti di esposizione. Il frame copre 9 x 9 arcmin; 1 pixel = 0,27 secondi d'arco; Il nord è su e l'est è a sinistra.
