Specchio del UT1 del VLT completo
Questa foto del primo specchio astronomico da 8,2 metri per il Very Large Telescope (VLT) dell'ESO è stata ottenuta all'inizio del novembre 1995, nello stabilimento REOSC di Saint Pierre du Perray (Francia). Mostra lo specchio gigante sottoposto alle prove finali di collaudo da ESO, dopo una fase di lucidatura di due anni presso REOSC durante la quale ha ricevuto la forma desiderata e incredibilmente precisa. Altri tre specchi di queste dimensioni seguiranno nei prossimi anni.
I moduli degli specchi del VLT sono stati realizzati con il materiale insensibile alla temperatura Zerodur di Schott Glaswerke AG a Mainz (Germania). Da qui sono stati trasportati al laboratorio REOSC vicino a Parigi in nave. Questa nuova struttura, unica al mondo, è stata specificamente concepita, costruita e attrezzata per lucidare e testare i grandi specchi VLT. È dotata di due macchine: una per la correzione, l'altra per la lucidatura, ed entrambe con un sistema di attuatori a 150 per supportare gli specchi sottili e flessibili da 23,5 tonnellate.
Ogni specchio ha una superficie di oltre 50 metri quadrati e le misure hanno dimostrato che la superficie ottica finale è corretta entro 0,00005 millimetri. Per esempio, ciò corrisponde ad una precisione di soli 1 millimetro di deviazione su una superficie con un diametro di 165 chilometri (equivalente all'intera area parigina!).
Il primo specchio è stato ora inserito nella sua scatola di trasporto. Sarà trasferito nel sito del VLT Observatory di Paranal, in Cile, quando l'assemblaggio delle parti meccaniche del primo telescopio VLT sarà completato all'inizio del 1997.
