Nuove webcam per ALMA e Paranal

Presso il VLT (Very Large Telescope) e ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) sono state installate nuove webcam ad alta definizione. Queste fotocamere forniranno 24 ore al giorno, 7 giorni su 7, immagini interattive di qualità migliore degli osservatori più importanti in Cile e andranno a integrare l’insieme delle live webcam dell’ESO già esistenti.
Le nuove fotocamere forniranno immagini live a 360 gradi delle attività che vengono svolte durante l’anno agli osservatori e potranno essere utilizzate in maniera interattiva per esplorare i siti in tutte le direzioni, con una vista estremamente dettagliata. Inoltre, vi sono diversi “punti di interesse” ad alta risoluzione, compreso un feed dedicato al monte Cerro Armazones in Cile — il sito del futuro E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope) — per documentare la costruzione del telescopio ottico più grande al mondo, la cui finalizzazione è prevista per il 2024. Le webcam mostrano anche le operazioni dei telescopi ausiliari più piccoli situati al Paranal, e, in giornate con visibilità molto buona, è possibile vedere anche il vulcano Llullaillaco, che si trova a una distanza di 190 km, al confine tra Cile e Argentina. Presso il sito di ALMA si possono anche osservare le antenne dell’ESO, dell’America del Nord (Stati Uniti e Canada) e dell’Asia Orientale (Giappone, Taiwan e Repubblica di Corea), oltre al telescopio APEX, situato sullo sfondo. In queste immagini si possono anche ammirare alcune meraviglie della natura: lo stratovulcano Licancabur e le curiose formazioni di neve a forma di lama conosciute con il nome di “penitentes”, che si formano soltanto ad altitudini elevate, come nel caso della zona in cui si trova ALMA.
Le fotocamere sono così sensibili che permettono di osservare il cielo notturno sopra il Paranal e ALMA come se ci si trovasse sul posto. A volte sono anche visibili i brillanti raggi laser gialli delle ottiche adattive del VLT proiettati in alto nell’atmosfera.
Le nuove webcam rappresentano anche un traguardo, in quanto sono le prime al mondo a fornire immagini live dagli osservatori. ALMA e Paranal appaiono in immagini fisheye 4k estremamente nitide, che potranno anche essere utilizzate nei planetari in tutto il mondo, compreso il futuro Planetario e Centro Espositivo Supernova dell’ESO in Germania.
Le fotocamere sono state fornite da Apical. Apical, che ha sede in Francia, è un’azienda high-tech specializzata in soluzioni innovative per l’acquisizione di immagini a campo largo e ad alta risoluzione e per la connettività di rete in luoghi dalle condizioni estreme.
