Flying over Cerro Armazones

At Cerro Armazones in the Chilean Atacama Desert, the construction of "the world's biggest eye on the sky", the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is taking place. The 39-metre telescope will sit at the top of the 3000-metre high summit, with a spectacular view over the surroding mountain tops and the red dry desert.

The construction of the telescope is carried out by the ACe Consortium, and from this drone footage from May 2022 we get to stare down in the 55-metre diameter circle containing the foundation that will support the ELT. The walls of the dome are starting to take place, and work is moving forward.
