SEST blue

Close-up shot of the giant dish of the Swedish–ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST), reflecting shades of blue under the clear sky over the Chilean Atacama desert, where the telescope is situated.

The SEST was built on behalf of the Swedish Natural Science Research Council (NFR) and ESO. It was the only large sub-millimetre telescope in the southern hemisphere at the time of its first light. SEST was decommissioned in 2003, and is superseded by APEX, and ALMA, on Chajnantor.

This image was published as part of the initiative "Your ESO Pictures", originally released on the ESO Flickr group pool.
