Vereinbarung über den Bau von 4MOST unterzeichnet

Der Spektrograf der nächsten Generation wird die Leistungsfähigkeit von VISTA erhöhen

Die ESO hat einen Vertrag mit einem Konsortium unter der Leitung des Leibniz-Instituts für Astrophysik in Potsdam (AIP) [1] für den Bau von 4MOST unterzeichnet. Dabei handelt es sich um ein einzigartiges, neues spektroskopisches Instrument der nächsten Generation, das an VISTA, dem Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy der ESO am Paranal-Observatorium im Norden Chiles installiert werden wird.

Die Vereinbarung wurde vom ESO-Generaldirektor Tim de Zeeuw sowie von Matthias Steinmetz und Matthias Winker für das AIP in Potsdam unterzeichnet. Auch Johanna Wanka, die deutsche Bundesministerin für Bildung und Forschung, und Martina Münch, die brandenburgische Ministerin für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur, waren bei der Unterzeichnung anwesend.

4MOST, das 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope, wird an VISTA dort installiert, wo derzeit die VISTA Infrared Camera montiert ist, das aktuelle Arbeitspferd von VISTA. Es wird dem Teleskop einzigartige neue Möglichkeiten eröffnen. Das Instrument soll ab 2022 dabei helfen, die aktuell dringendsten astronomischen Fragen zu beantworten, die Dynamik und chemische Evolution der Milchstraße untersuchen, eine Vielzahl aktiver Galaxien und Galaxiecluster vermessen und die Modelle des sich ausdehnenden Universums überprüfen [2].

Das Beobachtungsgebiet deckt den gesamten sichtbaren Wellenlängenbereich ab. 4MOST wird dadurch viele wichtige astronomische Fragen beantworten können und ist speziell als Ergänzung für die drei weltraumbasierten Observatorien von besonderem europäischen Interesse entwickelt worden: GaiaEUCLID, und eROSITA. Zusätzlich stellt es eine spektroskopische Vervollständigung von vielen weiteren Instrumenten dar, die einen großen Himmelsbereich abdecken, beispielsweise das VSTPan-STARRS, der Dark Energy SurveyLSSTASKAPWISE und PLATO.

[2] 4MOST wird es Astronomen erlauben, die spektrale Verteilung des Lichts von etwa 2400 Objekten gleichzeitig über ein Sichtfeld von vier Quadratgrad zu untersuchen — das entspricht einer Fläche von 20 Vollmonden. 4MOST wird hauptsächlich spektroskopische Untersuchungen des Südhimmels durchführen und 25 Millionen Spektren alle fünf Jahre von einer Fläche von über 17 000 Quadratgrad aufzeichnen – mehr als 40 % des gesamten Himmels. Während der geplanten Lebenszeit von fünfzehn Jahren sollen somit 75 Millionen Spektren zusammenkommen.

2010 hat die ESO die astronomische Gemeinschaft dazu aufgerufen, Ideen für das Design des Weitfeldspektrografen vorzuschlagen. Zwei Konzepte wurden für die Planungs- und Konstruktionsphase ausgewählt: 4MOST und MOONS (der Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph), der 2018 den Betrieb aufnehmen soll.
