Die Republik Korea beteiligt sich an ALMA

Am 17. August 2014 haben das japanische National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) und das Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) eine Vereinbarung über den Betrieb und die Entwicklung von ALMA unterzeichnet. Mit diesem Abkommen hat sich die Republik Korea offiziell dem ostasiatischen ALMA-Konsortium angeschlossen, bei dem bisher Japan und Taiwan Mitglieder sind.
Japan und Südkorea haben bereits die aktive Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Astronomie gefördert. Im Jahr 2001 haben die beiden Länder erfolgreich Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)-Beobachtungen durchgeführt, indem sie das 45-Meter-Radioteleskop vom Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO) des National Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) und das koreanische 14-Meter-Radioteleskop vom Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory miteinander gekoppelt haben. Im folgenden Jahr haben das NAOJ und KASI offiziell eine Vereinbarung zur weiteren Stärkung der Zusammenarbeit unterschrieben. Ein Jahrzehnt später, im März 2012, haben NAOJ und KASI ein Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) über die Zusammenarbeit am ALMA-Projekt unterzeichnet. Dieses Abkommen beinhaltet die Beteiligung Koreas am ALMA-Projekt und neben dem Beitrag zum Betrieb von ALMA auch die Entwicklung neuer Instrumente. Es ist zu erwarten, dass die Vereinbarung die Kooperation Südkoreas mit den anderen ALMA-Partnern auf dem Gebiet der Astronomie steigern und die Vielfältigkeit und Innovationskraft der ostasiatischen astronomischen Forschung fördern wird.
