Grundstein für die Erweiterung des ESO-Hauptsitzes gelegt

Am 11. Juni 2012 um 18:00 Uhr fand am Hauptsitz der Europäischen Südsternwarte in Garching bei München eine Zeremonie zur Grundsteinlegung für die Erweiterung des ESO-Gebäudes statt.
In einer Zeitkapsel wurden eine Liste mit den Namen der Delegierten des ESO-Council, die neueste Ausgabe des ESO Messenger und eine aktuelle Tageszeitung versiegelt und in das Fundament des Gebäudes eingelassen.
Die Erweiterung wird aus einem Bürogebäude und einem Technikbau bestehen, die über eine überdachte Brücke mit dem alten Hauptquartier verbunden sind. Der Entwurf stützt sich stark auf die Verwendung natürlicher Lichtquellen und sieht zwei Innenhöfe vor. Dieses ungewöhnliche und innovative Konzept greift auch die Kurvenformen des bereits vorhandenen Hauptgebäudes auf. Weitere Details sind unter eso1215 zu finden.
Das neuartige Bürogebäude, das vom Architekturbüro Auer+Weber+Assoziierte entworfen wurde, wird es der ESO ermöglichen, alle am Standort Garching lokalisierten Mitarbeiter, die derzeit teilweise in behelfsmäßigen Büros oder in anderen Gebäuden auf dem Garchinger Forschungscampus untergebracht sind, wieder zusammenzubringen und zugleich Wiege jener technologischen Innovationen sein, die Grundvoraussetzung für die anspruchsvollen zukünftigen Projekte der ESO sind – zum Beispiel für das European Extremely Large Telescope. Ein Teil der Erweiterung wird aus einer zylindrischen Struktur mit einem beinahe so großen Durchmesser wie der 39,3 Meter Hauptspiegel des E-ELT bestehen.
Die Veranstaltung fiel mit der Sitzung des leitenden Gremiums der ESO, dem ESO-Council, in Garching zusammen. Repräsentanten der ESO-Mitgliedsländer, Xavier Barcons, der Präsident des ESO-Councils, Tim de Zeeuw, der Generaldirektor der ESO, Philipp Auer, Architekt und Geschäftsführer von Auer+Weber+Assoziierte und Christoph Haupt, der Projektleiter für die Erweiterung des ESO-Hauptsitzes waren ebenso anwesend wie Hannelore Gabor, die Bürgermeisterin von Garching, und Klaus Zettl, der Leiter des Garchinger Bau- und Umweltamtes.
