Un trou noir soufflant une rafale
À environ 70 millions d'années-lumière de la Terre, dans la constellation de la Grue, se trouve la galaxie NGC 7582, une galaxie spirale abritant en son cœur un trou noir supermassif. Ces images ont été prises dans le cadre d'une étude utilisant l'instrument MUSE sur le Very Large Telescope (VLT) de l'ESO pour découvrir l'effet d'un trou noir actif sur la formation d'étoiles dans la galaxie.
La galaxie contient un noyau actif (AGN) - un moteur central extrêmement énergétique alimenté par le trou noir supermassif qui engloutit la matière dans son environnement immédiat. La matière s'échauffe au cours de ce processus, libérant d'énormes quantités d'énergie et des vents puissants dans la région environnante. Mais quel effet cela a-t-il sur la galaxie dans son ensemble ?
Pour le savoir, une étude récente, dirigée par Stéphanie Juneau du NOIRLab (NSF) aux États-Unis, a examiné la distribution de différents éléments ionisés dans la galaxie. L'image de droite montre l'oxygène, l'azote et l'hydrogène en bleu, vert et rouge respectivement. Les zones rougeoyantes sont des régions à forte activité de formation d'étoiles, tandis que les régions bleues dominantes montrent la matière en forme de cône qui s'écoule de l'AGN. L'image de gauche, qui couvre la même zone, montre une vue plus classique de cette galaxie, avec des couloirs de poussière obscurcissant la lumière bleue et orange des étoiles.
MUSE a également permis à l'équipe de cartographier le mouvement des étoiles et du gaz. Ils ont découvert que NGC 7582 pourrait avoir une structure entourant son trou noir supermassif central qui protège le reste de la galaxie du flux d'énergie provenant de l'AGN, en le détournant sous la forme d'un vent extrêmement puissant.
