Vuosikymmenten ajan tiedemiehet ovat olettaneet, että galaksien yhteensulautumiset johtavat yleensä elliptisten galaksien muodostumiseen. ALMA:a ja joukkoa muita radioteleskooppeja käyttäneet tutkijat ovat nyt ensimmäistä kertaa havainneet suoria todisteita, että yhteen sulautuvat galaksit muodostavatkin kiekkogalakseja ja että tämä on itse asiassa perin yleistä. Tämä yllättävä tulos saattaa selittää miksi maailmankaikkeudessa on niin paljon Linnunradan kaltaisia spiraaligalakseja.
