Italian pääministeri vieraili Paranalin observatoriolla

Italian pääministeri Matteo Renzi vieraili Pohjois-Chilen Atacaman autiomaassa sijaitsevalla ESO:n Paranalin observatoriolla 24. lokakuuta 2015. ESO:n pääjohtaja, professori Tim de Zeeuw ja E-ELT -teleskoopin projektijohtaja Roberto Tamai veivät hänet kierrokselle maailman johtavalla, ESO:n tähtitieteen tutkimuslaitoksella.
Italian pääministerin seurassa oli ulkoasiain alivaltiosihteeri Mario Giro ja Italian Chilen suurlähettiläs Marco Ricci sekä muita Italian hallituksen virkamiehiä ja Francesco Starace, joka on Italian monikansallisen energiayhtiö ENEL:in pääjohtaja. Lisäksi läsnä olivat Chilen ulkoministeriön protokollapäällikkö Gloria Navarrete ja Chilen Italian suurlähettiläs Fernando Ayala.
Pääministeri Renziä ja hänen delegaationsa otti vastaan ESO:n pääjohtaja Tim de Zeeuw ja E-ELT -teleskoopin projektijohtaja Roberto Tamai, jotka isännöivät sitten kiertokäynnin tutkimuslaitoksella.
"Minulle on suuri ilo toivottaa pääministeri Renzi tervetulleeksi Paranalin observatoriolle," sanoi Tim de Zeeuw. "Italia on ollut ESO:n jäsenvaltio 33 vuotta ja Italian teollisuus on osallistunut huomattavasti järjestön toimintaan. Täällä näkemämme VLT-teleskoopin tähtitornit rakennettiin Italiassa. Italian hyvin aktiivinen tähtitieteilijäyhteisö on myös ESO:n laitteiden käytön eturintamassa tehdessään maailman johtavaa tiedettä."
Arvovaltaiset vieraat seurasivat neljän VLT:n yksikköteleskoopin tähtitornien avautumista niiden valmistautuessa yön havaintoihin. Heille esiteltiin myös VST-kartoitusteleskooppi, joka suunniteltiin ja rakennettiin Italiassa. Sitten he söivät päivällistä Paranalin palkintoja voittaneessa Residencia-rakennuksessa, jossa sijaitsevat observatorion majoitus- ja toimistotilat.
Italialaiset insinöörit ja tähtitieteilijät osallistuvat myös par'aikaa merkittävällä panoksella E-ELT -teleskoopin (European Extremely Large Telescope) suunnitteluun ja rakentamiseen. Teleskoopista tulee maailman suurin optisen ja infrapuna-alueen teleskooppi. E-ELT -teleskoopin projektijohtaja Roberto Tamai on myös kansallisuudeltaan italialainen. Pääministerille ja hänen delegaatiolleen näytettiin vain 20 kilometrin etäisyydellä Paranalista sijaitseva Cerro Armazones, jonne E-ELT -teleskooppia ollaan rakentamassa.
Pääministerin suunnitelma vierailla observatoriolla julkistettiin alunperin kesäkuussa 2015 Milanon Expo Milanossa. Kyseessä on maailmannäyttely, johon osallistui yli 140 valtiota ja tusinoittain järjestöjä. ESO tuki siellä tähtitiedeaiheisia toimintoja ja esitti ESO:n UHD-videoita, joissa esitellään Chilen vaikuttavaa yötaivasta.
ESO:n Paranalin observatorio sijaitsee 130 kilometriä etelään Antofagastasta, Chilen Atacaman autiomaan ytimessä. Paranal on 2635 metrin korkeudella meren pinnasta ja siten yksi maailman parhaita paikkoja maailmankaikkeuden tieteellisten havaintojen tekemiseksi. Neljän 8.2-metrin yksikköteleskoopin ja neljän 1.8-metrin aputeleskoopin muodostamine VLT-teleskooppeineen (Very Large Telescope) — maailman edistyksekkäin tähtitieteelliseen tutkimukseen omistettu optinen havaintolaite — sekä VISTA- ja VST-kartoitusteleskooppeineen Paranal on maailman tuotteliain maan pinnalta havaintoja tekevä tähtitieteellinen observatorio.

ESO:lla on Chilessä kolme ainutlaatuista huippuluokan observatoriota: La Silla, Paranal ja Chajnantor. ESO:lla on Paranalilla Very Large Telescope (VLT), maailman kehittynein näkyvää valoa havainnoiva tähtitieteellinen observatorio, ja kaksi kartoitusteleskooppia. VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja on maailman suurin kartoitusteleskooppi. VLT Survey Telescope on suurin vartavasten taivaan näkyvän valon kartoitukseen suunniteltu teleskooppi. ESO on yksi maailman suurimman tähtitieteellisen projektin, ALMA-teleskoopin pääyhteistyökumppaneista. Lähellä Paranalia sijaitsevalla Cerro Armazonesilla ESO rakentaa 39-metrin kokoista E-ELT -teleskooppia (European Extremely Large Telescope), josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
