Spiraali Leijonassa

Tässä uudessa ESO:n VLT-teleskoopin kuvassa on NGC 3521, Leijonan (Leo) tähtikuviossa noin 35 miljoonan valovuoden etäisyydellä Maasta sijaitseva spiraaligalaksi. Tällä näyttävällä kohteella, halkaisijaltaan 50 tuhatta valovuotta, on kirkas ja tiivis ydin, jota ympäröi yksityiskohdiltaan runsas spiraalirakenne.
Näyttävimmät piirteet kirkkaassa NGC 3521 -galaksissa ovat sen pitkät spiraalihaarat, joita täplittävät tähtienmuodostusalueet ja väliin sirotellut pölyvanat. Spiraalihaarat ovat melkoisen epäsäännölliset ja laikukkaat, mikä tekee siitä tyypillisen lohkeilleen spiraaligalaksin. Tällaisilla galakseilla on "pörröiset" spiraalihaarat, jotka ovat vastakohta Charles Messierin löytämän Pyörregalaksin M 51 kaltaisille puhtaille spriaaligalakseille.
NGC 3521 on kirkas ja suhteellisen lähellä. Sen voi helposti nähdä pienellä teleskoopilla - sellaisella, jota Messier käytti luetteloidessaan sumuisia ja komeetankaltaisia kohteita 1700-luvulla. Omituista kyllä, ranskalaiselta tähtitieteilijältä näyttää jääneen tämä laikukas spiraaligalaksi huomaamatta, vaikka hän tunnisti useita muita yhtä kirkkaita galakseja Leijonan tähdistössä.
Vasta Messierin julkaistessa lopullisen version luettelostaan vuonna 1784 toinen kuuluisa tähtitieteilijä, William Herschel, löysi NGC 3521:n varhaisessa vaiheessa yksityiskohtaista pohjoisen taivaan kartoitustaan. Suuremmalla, 47 senttimetrin läpimittaisella teleskoopillaan Herschel näki "kirkkaan keskustan, jota ympäröi utu," kuten hänen havaintomuistiinpanonsa kertovat.
Tässä uudessa VLT-teleskoopin kuvassa värikkäät, joskin vaikeasti erotettavat spiraalihaarat korvaavat Herschelin "udun". Vanhemmat tähdet hallitsevat punaisehkoa aluetta keskellä, kun taas nuoret, kuumat, siniset tähdet levittäytyvät spiraalihaaroihin etäämpänä keskustasta.
ESO:n Hidden Treasures 2010 -kilpailuun [1] osallistunut Oleg Maliy valikoi tämän vaikuttavan kuvan koostamiseen käytetyt kuvat ESO:n Chilessä sijaitsevan Paranalin observatorion VLT-teleskoopin FORS1-havaintolaitteelta. Kolmella eri suotimella, jotka taltioivat sinisen valon (värjätty siniseksi), keltavihreän valon (värjätty vihreäksi) ja lähi-infrapunavalon (värjätty punaiseksi), otetut kuvat on yhdistetty tämän kuvan valmistamiseksi. Kullakin suotimella valotusaika oli 300 sekuntia. Olegin kuva NGC 3521:stä sijoittui korkealle sijalle kilpailussa, johon osallistui lähes sata työtä.

Parhaillaan ESO suunnittelee 42-metristä optisen/lähi-infrapuna-alueen European Extremely Large -teleskooppia (E-ELT) josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
