Lodewijk Woltjer (1930–2019)

ESO:n kauiten palvellut Directon General Lodewijk Woltjer menehtyi sunnuntaina 25. elokuuta 2019, 89 vuoden ikäisenä.
Lodewijk Woltjer, jotka monet tunsivat ”Lo” -nimellä oli ESO:n kolmas ja kauiten palvellut Director General aina vuodesta 1975 vuoteen 1987 saakka. Hänellä oli vahva visio ESO:n tulevaisuudesta jo ennen kuin hänestä tuli Director General ja yksi suurimmista hänen kädenjäljistään ESO:ssa oli luoda tiedeyhteisö, joka muuntui täysin funktionaalisesta observatoriosta aktiiviseen tutkimusorganisaatioon.
Lisäksi tähän fundamentaaliseen muutokseen ja ESO:n työnkuvan laajenemisen lisäksi Professori Woltjer valvoi monia muita tärkeitä kehityshankkeita hänen virkakaudellaan. Nämä kehityshankkeet sisältävät Garchingin päämajan vihkimisen, sekä kahden uuden jäsenmaan lisäyksen vuonna 1982, Italian ja Sveitsin. Hän allekirjoitti sopimuksen Max Planck Institute for Astronomyn kanssa MPG/ESO 2.2-metrisen teleskoopin rakentamisesta, joka oli ratkaisevan tärkeä Very Large Telescopen (VLT) edeltäjä. Hän myös vahvisti ESO:n suhteita muihin organisaatioihin, kuten mm. allekirjoittaen sopimuksen Euroopan Avaruusjärjestön kanssa Space Telescope European Coordinating Facilitystä, joka sijoitettiin ESO:n Garchingiin. Juuri ennen Director General virkansa loppua hän sai hyväksynnän ESO neuvostolta VLT-teleskoopin rakentamisesta ja hän suuresti puolesta puhui sen sijoittamisesta Paranaliin optimaalisen sijaintinsa vuoksi.
Lodewijk Woltjer syntyi 26. Huhtikuuta 1930 Noordwijkissä, Alankomaissa, Jan Woltjerin lapseksi, joka myös oli ammatiltaan tähtitieteilijä. Hän opiskeli Leidenin Yliopistolla (Leiden University) ja hänen tohtoritutkimustaan valvoi Jan Oort. Vuonna 1957 hän väitteli tohtoriksi väitöskirjallaan Rapusumun magneettikentän rakenteesta. Väiteltyään tohtori Woltjer jatkoi tutkimustaan teoreettisessa astrofysiikassa ja plasma fysiikassa — tutkien kvasaareita, supernovien jäänteitä ja tähtien, sekä galaksien magneettikenttiä. Hän sai kaksi postdoc -positiota yliopistoihin Yhdysvaloissa ja niiden jälkeen hän palasi Leidenin Yliopistoon vuonna 1959 tähtitieteen luennoitsijaksi. Hänestä tuli kahden vuoden päästä teoreettisen astrofysiikan ja plasmafysiikan Professori ja hän pysyi virassa aina vuoteen 1964 saakka. Vuosien 1964 ja 1974 välillä Woltjer työskenteli Columbia Yliopistolla (Columbia University), New Yorkissa, ensiksi tähtitieteen laitoksen hallituksessa ja sen jälkeen Rutherfurd Professorina tähtitieteessä.
Aikakaudellaan ESOssa hän pysyi aktiivisena tähtitieteessä ja hän oli Kansainvälisen Tähtitieteellisen Unionin Presidenttinä kolme vuotta, vuodesta 1994 vuoteen 1997. Hän palveli myös monissa eri komiteoissa, valiokunnissa ja divisioonissa IAU:lla ja hän työskenteli Haute-Provencella, sekä Arcetri Observatorioilla.
