VISTA:n pikkuplaneettojen eläintarha
ESO:n VISTA-teleskoopin dataa käytettiin Aurinkokunnan pienkappaleiden lähi-infrapunaisen alueen ominaisuuksien selvittämisessä

Joukko eurooppalaisia tähtitieteilijöitä on käyttänyt ESO:n VISTA nimistä taivaan kartoitusteleskooppia luetteloidakseen suuren joukon pikkuplaneettoja, eli Aurinkokunnan pienkappaleita lähi-infrapunaisilla aallonpituuksilla. Heidän tutkimuksensa on johtanut tietohin lähes 40000:sta kohteesta.Tämä havaintoaineisto voi vastata varhaista Aurinkokuntaa koskeviin kysymyksisiin.
Aurinkokunnasta on toistaiseksi luetteloitu noin 700000 pientä kohdetta käsittäen kivisiä asteroideja ja jäisiä komeettoja. Tähtitieteilijät toivovat, että tutkimalla näitä kohteita saadaan tietoa Aurinkokunnan synnystä ja kehityksestä, sekä mahdollisista tulevaisuuden törmäyksistä näiden kappaleiden kanssa.
Ryhmä tutki osaa VISTA:n "Hemisphere Survey":stä, mikä kattaa noin 40% eteläisestä taivaasta. Käymällä huolellisesti läpi tämän kartoituksen valtavan datamäärän he pystyivät määrittämään paikan ja kirkkauden lähes 40000:lle kohteelle, joista väri saatiin selville noin 35000:lle. Tämä on ensimmäinen kerta, kun kartoituksen data on analysoitu näin tarkasti paljastaen näin suuren Aurinkokunnan pienkappaleiden joukon.
Erityisesti väri-informaatiota voidaan käyttää kappaleiden luetteloimiseksi, sillä se paljastaa niiden pinta-aineksen koostumuksen. Tämä rikas "eläinkokoelma" sisältää esimerkkejä kaikista tunnetuista pienkappaleiden joukoista: Maan läheiset asteroidit; Marsin radan leikkaajat; Hungaria asteroidit; päävyöhykkeen asteroidit; Cybele asteroidit; Hilda asteroidit; Troijalaiset; komeetat; Kuiperin vyöhykkeen kohteet ja esimerkkejä monista muista.
VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) on maailman suurin taivaan kartoitukseen käytettävä teleskooppi ja sen peilin halkaisija on 4.1 metriä. Erittäin laajan kuvakentän ja erityisen herkkien detektorien avulla se antaa tähtitieteilijöille aivan uuden näkymän eteläiselle taivaalle. Taivaan kartoitukset ovat nykyään erittäin tehokkaita suurien ja tehokkaiden laitteiden ansiosta. Nämä mahdollistavat tiedon saamisen suuresta määrästä kohteita, joille voidaan myöhemmin tehdä erilaisia tilastollisia analyysejä. Ne ovat tähtitieteilijöille ideaalisia lähteitä erilaisille tutkimusprojekteille, kuten tässä tutkimuksessa liikkuville läheisille kohteille, eli asteroideille ja komeetoille.

ESO:lla on Chilessä kolme ainutlaatuista huippuluokan observatoriota: La Silla, Paranal ja Chajnantor. ESO:lla on Paranalilla Very Large Telescope (VLT), maailman kehittynein näkyvää valoa havainnoiva tähtitieteellinen observatorio, ja kaksi kartoitusteleskooppia. VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja on maailman suurin kartoitusteleskooppi. VLT Survey Telescope on suurin vartavasten taivaan näkyvän valon kartoitukseen suunniteltu teleskooppi. ESO on yksi maailman suurimman tähtitieteellisen projektin, ALMA-teleskoopin pääyhteistyökumppaneista. Lähellä Paranalia sijaitsevalla Cerro Armazonesilla ESO rakentaa 39-metrin kokoista E-ELT -teleskooppia (European Extremely Large Telescope), josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
