ESO on allekirjoittaunut sopimuksen detektorien rakentamisesta MOONS-instrumenttiin

Maailman huippua edustava MOONS-spektrografi käyttää maailman suurimpia lähi-infrapuna alueen detektoreja

ESO on allekirjoittanut sopimuksen Teledyne Scientific & Imaging-yhtiön [1] kanssa detektorien rakentamisesta uuteen MOONS-instrumenttiin, mikä sijoitetaan ESO:n nykyiseen lippulaiva teleskooppiin, eli Cerro Paranalissa Chilessä sijaitsevaan "Very Large Telescope (VLT)"-teleskooppiin.

Detektorit ovat tyypiltään HAWAII-4RG ja ne ovat tähtitieteen lähi-infrapuna alueen seuraavan sukupolven detektoreja. Kussakin detektorissa on 16.7 miljoonaa pikseliä, joista jokainen on 15 mikrometrin kokoinen neliö, mikä tekee niistä suurimmat saatavilla olevat lähi-infrapunan detektorit.

Teknologia perustuu pitkään ja menestyksekkääseen historiaan samanlaisten, mutta pienempien detektorien rakentamisessa, joita on käytetty ESO:n teleskoopeissa yli 10 vuoden ajan. Näiden uuden sukupolven detektorien oletetaan toimivan samalla erinomaisella suorityskyvyllä, mutta niillä on suurempi pinta-ala.

Detektorit edustavat viimeistä vaihetta erittäin monimutkaisen MOONS-instrumentin (Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph) rakentamisessa. ESO:n toimeksiantona MOONS-instrumentin on suunnitellut ja rakentanut kansainvälinen konsortio [2]. Siihen tulee neljä uudentyyppistä detektoria, kun se asennetaan yhteen VLT-teleskooppiin.

MOONS kerää valoa useista kohteista samanaikaisesti optisesta lähi-infrapunaan. Laite käyttää maksimissaan tuhatta optista kuitua, joiden avulla jokaisesta kohteesta samaan oma spektri.  MOONS mahdollistaa useiden kohteiden spektrien ottamisen koko VLT:n näkökentän alueelta (halkaisija 25 kaariminuuttia) yhdellä havainnolla.

MOONS:in tarjoamat infrapuna-alueen ominaisuudet mahdollistavat kaukaisen universumin tutkimisen, sekä piilossa olevan Linnunradan keskuspullistuman tutkimisen. Se tulee havaitsemaan oman galaksimme tähtiä aina 40000 valovuoden etäisyydeltä, jolloin tähtitieteilijät kykenevät luomaan kolmiulotteisen kartan omasta galaksistamme [3] ja se antaa työkalun galaksien muodostumisen ja kehityksen tutkimukselle koko Universumin historian ajalta.

[3] Tämä kartoitusprojekti on erityisen haastava, sillä Maa sijaitsee Linnunradan tasossa ja tämä projekti on samanlainen, kuin jos yrittäisimme kartoittaa metsää sen sisäpuolelta.
