Her er stjernehoben RCW 38 i al sin glans, fra et nyt billede optaget med ESOs Very Large Telescope. Det er en test af kameraet HAWK-1 påmonteret det adaptive optiske system GRAAL. RCW 38 dukker frem i lysende farver og fine detaljer, og med mørke bånd, som slynger sig igennem det klare centralområde af denne unge stjernegruppe.
Billedet viser stjernehoben RCW 38, fanget med det infrarødfølsomme instrument HAWK-I, som er monteret på ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) i Chile. I de infrarøde bølgelængdeområder kan HAWK-1 se dybt ind i de støvholdige stjernehobe som for eksempel RCW 38, og her finder vi helt utroligt fine detaljer om de stjerner, som dannes inde i hoben. Den indeholder hundredevis af unge, varme og tunge stjerner, og den befinder sig omkring 5500 lysår borte i retning af stjernebilledet Vela (Sejlet).
Vi ser her de centrale områder af RCW 38, som er det klare blåtonede område. Her findes adskillige meget unge stjerner og protostjerner, som i øjeblikket er under dannelse. Den intensive stråling, som strømmer ud fra disse nyfødte stjerner, får den omgivende gas til at lyse op. I stærk kontrast til det, står så de bånd af koldere kosmisk støv, som slanger sig hen over området. Støvet lyser svagt i røde og orange farvetoner. Denne kontrast skaber det bemærkelsesværdig motiv - et stykke himmelkunst.
I tidligere billeder af dette område optaget i de synlige bølgelængder ser det ganske anderledes ud. I optiske optagelser ser man færre stjerner, fordi støv og gas blokerer for den slags lys. Ser man i infrarødt, kan man se igennem støvet; helt ind i det indre af stjernehoben.
HAWK-I er monteret på Unit Telescope 4 (Yepun), som er det ene af de fire store VLT-teleskoper. Instrumentet er følsomt i nær-infrarødt, og det bruges i mange forskellige videnskabelige roller. Det kan være billeder af de nære galakser eller af store tåger, og det kan være enkeltstjerner og exoplaneter.
GRAAL er et adaptive optics modul, som hjælper HAWK-I til at skabe disse flotte billeder. Fire laserstråler projiceres ud på nattehimlen, og de fungerer som kunstige sammenligningsstjerner. Hermed kan atmosfærens lufturo korrigeres væk, så billederne bliver langt skarpere.
Det aktuelle billede er optaget som del af en række testoptagelser - det, som kaldes science verification - med HAWK-1 og GRAAL. Testbillederne er en integreret del af den proces, som hører til ibrugtagningen af et nyt instrument på VLT. Man foretager en typisk serie af videnskabelige observationer, for at efter vise kapacieteten af det nye instrument.

Hun har samarbejdet med Joana Ascenso (CENTRA, University of Porto, Portugal), Amelia Bayo (University of Valparaiso, Chile), Arjan Bik (Stockholm University, Sverige), Hervé Bouy (Laboratoire d’astrophysique de Bordeaux, Frankrig), Lucas Cieza (University Diego Portales, Chile), Vincent Geers (UKATC, UK), Ray Jayawardhana (York University, Canada), Karla Peña Ramírez (University of Antofagasta, Chile), Rainer Schoedel (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Spanien), and Aleks Scholz (University of St Andrews, UK).
Science Verification for HAWK-I med GRAAL adaptive optik er præsenteret i en artikel i ESOs kvartalstidsskrit The Messenger. Titlen er: HAWK-I GRAAL Science Verification.
Forskerholdet, som foretog science verification bestod af Bruno Leibundgut, Pascale Hibon, Harald Kuntschner, Cyrielle Opitom, Jerome Paufique, Monika Petr-Gotzens, Ralf Siebenmorgen, Elena Valenti og Anita Zanella, alle fra ESO.
ESO er den fremmeste fællesnationale astronomiorganisation i Europa, og verdens langt mest produktive jordbaserede astronomiske observatorium. 16 lande er med i ESO: Belgien, Brazilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Italien, Nederlandene, Polen, Portugal, Spanien, Sverige, Schweiz, Storbritannien, Tjekkiet, Tyskland og Østrig, og desuden værtsnationen Chile. ESO har et ambitiøst program, som gør det muligt for astronomer at gøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser. Programmet har focus på design, konstruktion og drift af stærke jordbaserede observatorier. Desuden har ESO en ledende rolle i formidling og organisering af samarbejde omkring astronomisk forskning. ESO driver tre enestående observatorier i verdensklasse i Chile: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO VLT, Very Large Telescope, som er verdens mest avancerede observatorium for synligt lys, samt to oversigtsteleskoper. VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
