ALMA finder kolde gastråde i Oriontågen

De lange tråde af gasser i Oriontågen ser ud til at være rødglødende, men de er i virkeligheden så kolde, at kun teleskoper af ALMAs type kan se dem. Billedet er sammensat af data fra flere teleskoper.

Billedet viser en del af den berømte Oriontåge; et område med stjernedannelse, som befinder sig omkring 1350 lysår borte fra Jorden. Det er en mosaik af billeder optaget i millimeter-bølgelængdeområdet med Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) og IRAM 30-metre telescope, (de røde farver), kombineret med optagelser i infrarødt lys fra HAWK-I instrumentet på ESOs Very Large Telescope (de blå farver). De klare blåhvide stjerner øverst til venstre er Trapezet - en klynge af varme unge stjerner, som kun er nogle få millioner år gamle.

Disse tynde fiberagtige strukturer er lange tråde af kold gas, som kun kan observeres med teleskoper, som kan indfange stråling i millimeterbølgelængdeområdet. Både i synligt og i infrarødt lys er de usynlige, så ALMA er et af de eneste instrumenter, som kan bruges til at studere dem. Gasserne bliver med tiden til nyfødte stjerner. På grund af tyngdekræfterne fra gassen selv kollapser den i klumper, og når de er tilstrækkeligt tætte og varme dannes der protostjerner - forløbere for rigtige stjerner.

Astronomerne, som har indhøstet de data, som billedet er sammensat af, søgte efter spor af diazenyliumgas, som indgår i strukturerne. Resultatet blev dette nyopdagede netværk af 55 tråde af gasser.

Oriontågen er det nærmeste område, hvor der sker intens stjernedannelse, og derfor studerer vi den ofte og i stor detalje, fordi astronomerne gerne vil forstå mere af, hvordan stjerner dannes og udvikler sig i de første få millioner år. ESOs teleskoper har observeret det interessante område mange gange, og der er mere om tidligere opdagelser at finde her, her, og her.

Billedet her er sammensat af i alt 296 individuelle datasæt fra ALMA og IRAM teleskoperne. Det gør det til en af de største mosaikker af områder med stjernedannelse i høj opløsning, som til nu er fremstillet i millimeterbølgelængder[1].

Noter

[1] Tidligere mosaikker af Orionområdet i millimeterbølgelængder er optaget med teleskoper med blot en enkelt parabol, som for eksempel APEX. De nye observationer fra ALMA og IRAM anvender interferometri, hvor signalerne fra adskillige vidt spredte antenner samles for at give billeder med meget finere detaljer.

På Paranal driver ESO VLT, Very Large Telescope, som er verdens mest avancerede observatorium for synligt lys, samt to oversigtsteleskoper. VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
