En kosmisk superboble

ESO’s Very Large Telescope har optaget dette imponerende billede af stjernetågen omkring stjernehoben NGC 1929. Hoben ligger i den Store Magellanske Sky, der er en af Mælkevejens satellitgalakser. Denne stjernefødeklinik domineres af et kæmpestort eksemplar af det astronomerne kalder en superboble. Den er dannet af vinde fra unge stjerner og chokbølger fra supernovaeksplosioner.

Den Store Magellanske Sky er en af Mælkevejens små nabogalakser. Den rummer mange områder, hvor skyer af gas og støv danner nye stjerner. Et af disse områder, der omgiver stjernehoben NGC 1929, ses på dette billede fra ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Denne stjernetåge er officielt kendt som LHA 120-N 44, eller bare N 44. Varme, unge stjerner i NGC 1929 udsender intenst ultraviolet lys, der får gassen til at gløde. Denne effekt fremhæver superboblen, som den passende er kaldt. Den består af en stor skal af materiale, der har en størrelse på omkring 325 gange 250 lysår. Til sammenligning er der lidt over fire lysår fra Solen til den nærmeste nabostjerne.

Superboblen i N 44 er blevet dannet ved en kombination af to processer. Først rensede stjernevinde  – strømme af elektrisk ladede partikler fra de meget varme og tunge stjerne i centrum af stjernehoben – ud i midten af området. Så eksploderede tunge stjerner fra hoben som supernovaer, der skabte chokbølger og skubbede gassen længere ud og dannede den glødende boble.

Selv om superboblen er skabt af destruktive kræfter, bliver nye stjerner født langs kanten, hvor gassen er presset sammen. Som genbrug i kosmisk målestok vil denne nye generation af stjerner puste frisk liv ind i NGC 1929.

Dette billede er lavet af ESO med observationsdata, der er fundet af Manu Mejias fra Argentina [1], da han deltog i astrofoto-konkurrencen ”ESO’s Skjulte Skatte 2010” [2]. Konkurrencen blev afholdt af ESO i oktober-november 2010 og var for alle, som finder glæde ved at skabe smukke billeder af nattehimlen ved hjælp af astronomiske data, der er blevet optaget med professionelle teleskoper.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 40 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
