Betelgeuze portrætteret af ALMA
Den her orange klat er den nære stjerne Betelgeuse, som ALMA, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array ser den. Det er første gang nogensinde, at ALMA har observeret overfladen af en stjerne, og selvom det er første gang, er det det billede med højest opløsning, som nogensinde er optaget af Betelgeuse.
Betelgeuse er en af de største stjerner, vi kender. Den har en radius, som er omkring 1400 gange større end Solens
målt i millimeter-bølgelængdeområdet. Afstanden er omkring 600 lysår, og ude i retning af stjernebilledet Orion lyser den røde superkæmpe klart, hvad der kun giver den mulighed for en kort eksistens. Stjernen er omkring otte millioner år gammel, men den er allerede tæt på at blive en supernova. Når det sker, bliver eksplosionen synlig fra Jorden, selv i klart dagslys.
Stjernen er blevet observeret i mange andre bølgelængder; særligt i det visuelle, i infrarødt og i ultraviolet. Med ESOs Very Large Telescope har astronomerne opdaget en meges stor gassky omkring; næsten lige så stor som hele vores Solsystem. Der er også en enorm boble, som koger på overfladen af Betelgeuse. De opdagelser er med til at forklare, hvordan stjernen afgiver gas og støv i så enorme mængder (eso0927, eso1121). På billedet har ALMA observeret den varme gas i den lavere del af Betelgeuses kromosfære
i submillimeterområdet. At billedet ikke er symmetrisk skyldes, at der lokalt er højere temperaturer. ALMA kan hjælpe os til at forstå de meget udbredte atmosfærer i disse varme lysstærke stjerner.
