En by over skyerne i en galakse langt langt borte...
Som en krydsning mellem the Bespin Cloud City og isplaneten Hoth fra Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, ser vi her ESOs La Silla Observatorium under et tæppe af sne, mens solen er på vej ned ned.
De karakteristiske kupler over La Silla teleskoperne er lukkede for at beskytte instrumenterne mod det ugæstfrie miljø og det isnende kolde vejr.
I dette hvide landskab er MPG/ESO 2.2-meter teleskopet nok det mest iøjnefaldende på grund af dets sølvfarvede kuppel.
På en normal nat vil kuplerne åbnes i takt med at natten falder på, mens teleskoperne klarkøres til nattens observationer af kosmos.
På trods af at La Silla ligger på et af de tørreste steder på jorden, rammes området en sjælden gang af nedbør i form af sne eller regn, som det ses på dette snebillede taget af ESO fotoambassadør Malte Tewes. Selvom det godt kan blive koldt i Atacamaørknen, hvor La Silla ligger, bliver der dog meget sjældent koldere end 0 grader Celsius. Hvordan kan der så være sne?
Den meget tørre luft i området spiller en stor rolle i dette fænomen. Snefnuggene dannes i højere kolde luftlag, og på grund af den tørre luft sker der en lille fordampning mens de daler ned gennem luften. Fordampning kræver energi, hvorfor snefnuggene køles en lille smule på vejen ned. Jo mindre luftfugtighed, des højere temperaturer kan sneen overleve på turen gennem varmere luft. På den måde kan det sne, selv i Atacamaørknen.
