Himmelteater med gæsteoptrædende
Den skyfri aftenhimmel over over La Silla er premièrescene for en teaterforestilling ud over det sædvanlige på dette nye ESO-billede.
På scenen myldrer det med medvirkende. Hovedrolleindehaverne er Komet Lovejoy, som gløder grønligt i midten, Pleiaderne (med kunstnernavnet Syvstjernen hos os) for oven til højre, og California-tågen, som giver de røde farver fra lysende gasarter lige til højre for Lovejoy.
Ind fra venstre kommer så et klart stjerneskud, som ser ud til at være på vej ned i det grønlige tågede bælte at lys over horisonten.
Tilskuerne til denne himmelforestilling er teleskoperne på La Silla, og dramaet forstærkes af et lag af lavtliggende skyer over sletten under observatoriet. Lysstriben stammer fra Panamericana Highway.
Komet Lovejoys lange hale bliver blæst væk fra kometkernen af solvinden. Det grønne skær kommer fra kulstofforbindelser, som bliver eksiteret af Solens ultraviolette stråling.
Det er kometens første optræden i det indre Solsystem i de seneste 11.000 år. Dens meget elliptiske bane omkring Solen bliver hele tiden ændret en smule af de planeter, som den passerer, og det betyder, at det vil vare 8.000 år før vi kan få den fremkaldt til en ny gæsteforestilling. I mellemtiden er den så på tourne i de ydre dele af Solsystemet, hvor den kan forvente ret kølige anmeldelser.
Billedet er taget af ESOs fotoambassadør Petr Horálek under et besøg på La Silla i januar 2015. Billedet er resultat af en serie langtidsoptagelser af himlen, kombineret med en enkeltoptagelse af de jordiske objekter. Det sikrer, at de også kommer til at stå skarpt.
