Et kig ind i hjertet af Mira A og dens ledsager
Solens fremtid bliver afsløret ved at studere røde kæmpestjerner, og astronomerne kan også se, hvordan disse kæmper strør omkring sig med de grundstoffer, som er nødvendige for livet rundt omkring i Universet. En af de mest berømte røde kæmper er Mira A; den største i et binært stjernesystem omkring 400 lysår borte. Vi kigger ind i Miras hemmelige liv på dette billede fra ALMA.
Mira A er en gammel stjerne, som allerede er i gang med at sprede produkterne fra dens livsværk ud i rummet til genbrug. Mira As ledsager, Mira B kredser om den i den dobbelte afstand af den, der er fra Solen til Neptun.
Fra Mira A strømmer der en langsom stjernevind, som blidt former det omgivende stof. Nu har ALMA bekræftet, at Mira As ledsager er en ganske anden slags stjerne, med en helt anderledes stjernevind. Mira B er en varm, tæt hvid dværgstjerne med en kraftig og hurtig stjernevind.
De nye observationer viser, hvordan vindene fra de to stjerner tilsammen danne en smuk og kompleks tåge om dem. Den specielle hjerteformede boble i midten dannes af Mira Bs kraftige stjernevind, som forstyrrer Mira As mere afdæmpede del af tågen. Hjertet, som er dannet indenfor de seneste 400 år, og resten af gassen, som omgiver stjerneparret, viser at de i lang tid tilsammen har bidraget til dette mærkelige og smukke område i rummet.
Det er ved at studere stjerner som Mira A og Mira B, at videnskabsfolkene håber på at finde ud af, hvordan dobbeltstjernerne i vores Mælkevej adskiller sig fra enkeltstjerner som Solen. Specielt hvilket bidrag de giver til Mælkevejens økosystem. Selvom de to stjerner i parret er langt fra hinanden, påvirker de alligevel hinanden stærkt. Andre gamle og døende stjerner har også mærkelige og specielle omgivelser. Det ved vi både fra ALMA og fra andre teleskoper, men det er ikke altid til at se, om stjernerne er singler som Solen, eller binære som Mira.
