ESO underskriver kontrakt på de deformerbare spejle til E-ELT

ESO har underskrevet kontrakt med det franske optikfirma Reosc, som er et firma under Sagem, Safrangruppen om fremstilling af de deformerbare skal-spejle, som kommer til at udgøre det fjerde spejl (M4) på European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Spejlene bliver monteret og understøttet i den adaptive spejlenhed, som bliver det største adaptive spejl, som nogensinde er bygget (se ann15045).
Kontrakten blev underskrevet af repræsentanter for Resoc og ESO ved en ceremoni i ESOs hovedkvarter den 8. juli 2015.
M4 spejlsystemet er en nøgleenhed på E-ELT. Det måler 2,4 m i diameter, og det kommer til at bestå af seks tynde dele, som hver kun er 1,95 mm tyk, fremstillet af keramisk glas. Hver skal udgør en af seks 60-graders appelsinstykker, som tilsammen udgør det cirkulære M4 spejl.
SCHOTT leverer de keramiske dele til Resoc, og så tilpasser og polerer Resoc de tynde skaller. Konsortiet AdOptica i Italien, med ADS International og Microgate, som er partnere med INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) er underleverandører. Disse firmaer leverer strukturer og understøtning til spejlet (ann15045).
I adskillige år har man arbejdet på prototyper til dette udfordrende konstruktionsprojekt. Resoc fremstillede det første flade tyndskalsspejl til E-ELT allerede i 2008. Dette tynde 1,95 mm 1 m spejl blev så skåret i to segmenter til brug for demonstrationsprototypen[1]. I 2010 lykkedes det Resoc at fremstille et 2,7 m tyndspejl af borofloatlgas, og at skære det i segmenter.
Derefter leverede Resoc så den første tynde skal til det deformerbare spejl iVery Large Telescope (VLT). Dette asfæriske spejl (ann12015) blev coated og integreret i støtteenheden, og det er siden blevet testet af ESO fra slutningen af 2012 (potw1307a). Et andet tyndskalsspejl til VLTs deformerbare sekondærspejl (DSM) blev leveret i slutningen af 2014 (ann14010), og det bliver testet af ESO i starten af 2016.
Resoc kommer til at fremstille 12 spejlskaller til E-ELT M4. De første seks indenfor de kommende fem år, og de sidste frem til 2014.
