Første spadestik er taget til ESOs Supernova Planetarium og besøgscenter

I dag blev første spadestik taget til ESOs Supernova Planetarium og Besøgscenter ved ESO-hovedkvarteret i Garching i Tyskland. Nu kan byggeriet komme i gang for alvor.
ESO Supernova bliver et fantastisk nyt fyrtårn for astronomien overfor offentligheden. Det er et samarbejde imellem Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) og ESO, som gør det muligt at sætte dette nye projekt i gang. Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), som er en tysk fond til støtte for naturvidenskaberne og datalogien tilbød at finansiere hele byggeriet, og ESO kommer til at drive institutionen. Den markante bygning er tegnet af arkitekterne Bernhardt + Partner.
I det nye besøgs- og formidlingscenter vil gæsterne kunne opleve astronomien, og særligt ESOs forskningsbidrag, projekter og teknologiske gennembrud på en immersiv måde. Centeret indeholder et full-dome[1] planetarium og mere end 2000 kvadratmeter til blivende udstillinger og særudstillinger. Desuden vil der være konferencelokaler, hvor der bliver afholdt en lang række forelæsninger, workshops og konferencer. Alt bliver præsenteret både på engelsk og tysk.
Før det første spadestik talte ESOs generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw som den første. Til stede var repræsentanter for HITS og KTS og inviterede gæster fra lokalområdet, medlemmer af Garching Science Campus, gæster fra Technische Universität München, nøglemedarbejdere fra ESO og pressen. Der blev holdt andre taler af Klaus Tschira, som er grundlægger og administrerende direktør i Klaus Tschira Stiftelsen, Garchings borgmester Dietmar Gruchmann og arkitekten Manfred Bernhardt.
Derefter begav man sig til selve byggepladsen, hvor det første spadestik blev foretaget. ESO Supernova er færdigbygget tidligt i 2017, og åbningen for publikum er sat til en gang i 2017.
Samtidig blev den nye institutions website åbnet. Her kan kommende gæster, journalister, lærere, partnere og andre planetarier studere de planer, som er for ESO Supernova. Det drejer sig blandt andet om udstillinger, planetarieforestillinger og rundvisninger. På websiderne annonceres også jobmulighederne for interesserede, både som ansatte, interns og voluntører. Interesserede sponsorer og partnere kan også se, hvilke fordele der kan tilbydes fra ESO Supernova.

[1] I et full-dome planetarium bliver der projiceret et sammenhængende videobillede som dækker hele kuplen med film og grafik i High Definition. Der vil også være mulighed for at projicere i visuelt 3D, så gæsterne udstyret med passende briller kan oplever for eksempel virtuelle rejser i rummet, så det foregår i fuld 3D hele vejen omkring dem - det er det, der ligger i begrebet immersivitet.
HITS
Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS gGmbH) blev stiftet af medstifteren af SAP, Klaus Tschira og hans fond, Klaus Tschira Stiftelsen. Det er et privat non-profit forskningsinstitut. HITS arbejder med grundforskning indenfor behandling, strukturering og ananlyse af store datamængder i naturvidenskaberne, indenfor matematik og indenfor datalogi. Forskningsområderne rækker fra molekylærbiologi til astrofysik.
KTS
Klaus Tschira Stiftelsen støtter naturvidenskaberne og datalogien og kendskabet til disse fagområder. Stiftelsens aktiviteter starter i børnehaverne, og følger op i skoler på universiteter og i forskningsinstitutionerne.
ESO
ESO er den fremmeste fællesnationale astronomiorganisation i Europa, og verdens langt mest produktive jordbaserede astronomiske observatorium. 16 lande er med i ESO: Belgien, Brazilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrig, Italien, Nederlandene, Polen, Portugal, Spanien, Sverige, Schweiz, Storbritannien, Tjekkiet, Tyskland og Østrig, og desuden værtsnationen Chile. ESO har et ambitiøst program, som gør det muligt for astronomer at gøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser. Programmet har focus på design, konstruktion og drift af stærke jordbaserede observatorier. Desuden har ESO en ledende rolle i formidling og organisering af samarbejde omkring astronomisk forskning. ESO driver tre enestående observatorier i verdensklasse i Chile: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO VLT, Very Large Telescope, som er verdens mest avancerede observatorium for synligt lys, samt to oversigtsteleskoper. VISTA, som observerer i infrarødt, er verdens største oversigtsteleskop, og VLT Survey Teleskopet er det største teleskop bygget til at overvåge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er en af de største partnere i ALMA, som er det største eksisterende astronomiprojekt. For tiden bygges E-ELT, et 39 m optisk og nærinfrarødt teleskop på Cerro Armazones, tæt ved Paranal. Det bliver "verdens største himmeløje".
