Galaxie tisíce rubínů
Ve tmě září podivuhodný větrník

Přístroj Wide Field Imager nám nabídl pohled do záludných vírů spirální galaxie M83, která je svým vzhledem podobná naší Galaxii. Přezdívá se jí Jižní větrník a jde o krásný příklad spirální galaxie zářící světlem miliard hvězd a rudou rubínovou září vodíkového plynu.
Dramatický snímek galaxie M83 byl pořízen na observatoři La Silla, která se nachází vysoko v horách Chilské pouště Atacama. M83 je od nás vzdálena přibližně 15 miliónů světelných let a na jižní obloze ji najdeme v rozlehlém souhvězdí Hydry. V průměru má přes 40 000 světelných let a je zhruba 2,5 krát menší než naše Galaxie. V některých směrech se přesto podobá naší Galaxii. Obě dvě mají galaktické jádro (husté sférické centrální seskupení hvězd) protnuté příčkou.
Na uvedeném obrázku vidíme spirální ramena zkrášlena nespočetnými rubínovými světly. Ve skutečnosti se jedná o obří oblaka zářícího vodíkového plynu. Ultrafialové světlo, pocházející z nově narozených hmotných hvězd, oblaka ionizuje a ta potom svítí červeně. Rudé oblasti, kde vznikají nové hvězdy, jsou na snímku výrazně odlišné od žluté záře starších hvězd poblíž osy rotace galaxie. Obrázek rovněž ukazuje jemný náznak zatočených tmavých prachových proudů, jenž se proplétají napříč spirálními rameny.
M83 byla v polovině 18. století objevena francouzským astronomem Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. O několik desetiletí později ji do svého, dnes již slavného, katalogu objektů vzdáleného vesmíru zahrnul jiný francouzský astronom a slavný lovec komet Charles Messier. Nedávná pozorování záhadné galaxie v ultrafialovém a rádiovém oboru odhalila, že také ve vzdálených oblastech (vzdálenějších než můžeme na obrázku pozorovat) se nacházejí nové mladé hvězdy. Rentgenová pozorování srdce M83 odhalila, že se i zde, hluboko uvnitř oblaku přehřátého plynu o teplotě kolem 7 miliónů stupňů Celsia, nové hvězdy doslova rojí. M83 je zároveň jedno z míst, kde nejčastěji vybuchují supernovy. Jde o jednu ze dvou galaxií, kde se za posledních 100 let objevilo 6 supernov. Jedna z nich (SN 1957D) byla pozorovatelná po celých 30 let!
Přístroj Wide Field Imager (WFI) je speciální kamera, připojená k 2,2 metrovému Max-Planck Society/ESO teleskopu, nacházejícím se na observatoři La Silla v Chile. Ve výšce téměř 2400 metrů nad mořem, na vrcholu hor pouště Atacama, si může observatoř ESO La Silla vychutnat tu nejčistší a nejtemnější hvězdou oblohu naší planety. Zde je ideální místo pro studium nejhlubších koutů vesmíru. Pro vytvoření uvedeného obrázku snímala WFI kamera M83 přibližně 100 minut přes sadu speciálních filtrů. Díky tomu vynikly detaily galaxie. Jasné hvězdy na pozadí náleží do naší Galaxie, zatímco tma za M83 je opepřena jemnými šmouhami vzdálenějších galaxií.
