Galaxie plná překvapení — spirální galaxie NGC 3621
Tento snímek pořízený dalekohledem VLT (Very Large Telescope) Evropské jižní observatoře (ESO) zachycuje skutečně pozoruhodnou galaxii známou jako NGC 3621. Jedná se o galaxii s čistě diskovým tvarem. Stejně jako jiné spirálové galaxie má plochý disk protkaný tmavými pruhy hmoty a výraznými spirálovými rameny, kde se v hvězdokupách tvoří mladé hvězdy (modré tečky na snímku). Zatímco většina spirálních galaxií má centrální výdutě – velké skupiny starých hvězd nahromaděné v kompaktní sférické oblasti – NGC 3621 je nemá. Na tomto snímku je zřejmé, že centrum je pouze jasnější, ale nemá skutečnou výduť, jako například NGC 6744 (eso1118).
NGC 3621 je zajímavá také tím, že se předpokládá, že v jejím středu se nachází aktivní supermasivní černá díra, která pohlcuje hmotu a produkuje záření. To je poněkud neobvyklé, protože většina těchto takzvaných aktivních galaktických jader se nachází v galaxiích s výraznými výdutěmi. V tomto konkrétním případě se předpokládá, že supermasivní černá díra má relativně malou hmotnost, asi 20 000krát větší než Slunce.
Další zajímavostí je, že se předpokládá, že v blízkosti jádra galaxie se nacházejí také dvě menší černé díry s hmotností několik tisíc násobku hmotnosti Slunce. NGC 3621 je tedy mimořádně zajímavý objekt, který i přes to, že nemá centrální výdutě, může mít ve své centrální oblasti systém tří černých děr.
Tato galaxie se nachází v souhvězdí Hydry (mořského hada) a je viditelná pomocí dalekohledu střední velikosti. Tento snímek, pořízený pomocí filtrů B, V a I přístrojem FORS1 na výkonném dalekohledu VLT, ukazuje pozoruhodné detaily tohoto podivného objektu a odhaluje také množství galaxií v pozadí. Viditelná je také řada jasných hvězd v popředí, které patří do naší vlastní Mléčné dráhy.
