Especial ESOcast 43: Agudizando la vista Especial 50 aniversario, episodio #3
El tercer capítulo especial de esta serie — ESOcast 43 — presenta a la instalación más destacada de ESO: el Very Large Telescope (VLT). En este episodio descubrimos la tecnología de vanguardia que hay detrás de este telescopio, que ha proporcionado a los astrónomos una sin par visión del universo.
Para obtener las imágenes más precisas del cielo, el VLT tiene que enfrentarse a dos efectos que distorsionan la imagen de los objetos celestes. El primero, las deformaciones producidas en los espejos debido a su gran tamaño. Este problema se corrige utilizando un sistema de soporte controlado por ordenador — óptica activa — que asegura que los espejos mantengan la superficie deseada bajo cualquier circunstancia. El segundo efecto lo produce la atmósfera de la Tierra, hacienda que las estrellas se vean borrosas, incluso con los telescopios más grandes. La óptica adaptativa es una técnica de corrección en tiempo real de las distorsiones producidas por la atmósfera utilizando espejos controlados por ordenador que se deforman cientos de veces por segundo para compensar los efectos de la atmósfera.
Como ejemplo de la capacidad del VLT, las cámaras infrarrojas de los VLT, junto con la óptica adaptativa, pudieron ver, a través de las espesas nubes de polvo que bloquean nuestra visión, el núcleo de la Vía Láctea. Las imágenes obtenidas durante muchos años han permitido a los astrónomos ver estrellas orbitando alrededor de un monstruoso agujero negro que se encuentra en el centro de nuestra galaxia. Incuso fue posible detectar destellos energéticos de las nubes de gas cayendo en el agujero negro.
