CERCA DEL CIELO - LANZAN NUEVO LIBRO SOBRE LA FLORA Y FAUNA EN ALMA

Hoy, un nuevo libro educacional y de divulgación sobre ALMA fue presentado públicamente a representantes de la comunidad de San Pedro de Atacama, en el contexto de un nuevo aniversario de esta comuna, en la Región de Antofagasta (Chile).

Titulado “Cerca del Cielo: Patrimonio Biológico en la zona de ALMA” y editado en español e inglés por ESO en Chile, el libro recoge las espectaculares observaciones de flora y fauna en la zona de ALMA, realizadas por expertos que fueron comisionados para investigar este patrimonio y proponer iniciativas claves para su protección.

Quiero agradecer al Proyecto ALMA por la oportunidad que nos brinda de recibir un libro de estas características, el cual será un apoyo a la educación de los niños y jóvenes. Esperamos que a través de él se vaya conociendo más nuestra flora y fauna, que sabemos es rica en todo el sector de Atacama La Grande. Por ello, invito a profesores y estudiantes a aprovechar este recurso, que se pondrá a disposición de nuestros establecimientos”, dijo la Alcaldesa de San Pedro de Atacama, Sandra Berna Martínez.

Copias del libro “Cerca del Cielo” serán donadas a todas las escuelas de la zona, como una contribución a la educación de niños y jóvenes en el norte de Chile.

Desde los comienzos del proyecto, la construcción de ALMA ha tenido un compromiso firme con el medio ambiente y la cultural local, protegiendo especies únicas de flora y fauna, y preservando antiguas estancias altiplánicas”, señaló Jacques Lassalle, responsable de Seguridad de ALMA, quien representó al proyecto durante la ceremonia. “Animales como la llama, el zorro o el cóndor no sólo viven en la región donde se está construyendo ALMA. También son elementos esenciales en las constelaciones andinas ancestrales. Son parte del mismo cielo que será explorado por ALMA dentro de los próximos años”.

El proyecto ALMA es un gigantesco observatorio de carácter internacional, actualmente en construcción en el Llano de Chajnantor, en la Región de Antofagasta (Chile). ALMA estará compuesto incialmente por 66 telescopios de alta precisión, operando en longitudes de onda de 0.3 a 9.6 milímetros. Las antenas de ALMA serán combinadas electrónicamente y proveerán observaciones astronómicas que son equivalentes a la de un solo telescopio individual de enorme tamaño y resolución.

Chajnantor fue seleccionado como el lugar ideal para la construcción de ALMA, luego de varios años de estudios atmosféricos y meterológicos. Su gran altura, atmósfera estable y baja humedad lo convierten en uno de los mejores lugares en el mundo para la radio astronomía. Para proteger las excelentes condiciones de Chajnantor, el Gobierno de Chile declaró gran parte de esta área como reserva científica.

El libro “Cerca del Cielo” está disponible online . Es el segundo libro sobre ALMA para el público general, siguiendo el lanzamiento previo de “Huellas en el Desierto”, también disponible en internet.

ALMA es una asociación entre Europa, Asia del Este y Norteamérica, en cooperación con la República de Chile. Es financiado en Europa por ESO, en Asia del Este por los Institutos Nacionales de Ciencias Naturales de Japón en cooperación con la Academia Sinica en Taiwan, y en Norteamérica por la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos en cooperación con el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones de Canadá. La construcción y operación de ALMA son lideradas por parte de Europa por ESO, por parte de Asia del Este por el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Japón y por parte de Norteamérica por el Observatorio Radio Astronómico Nacional, el cual es manejado por Associated Universities, Inc.
