La perfección de DSHARP en ALMA
La imagen de la semana muestra veinte espectaculares discos protoplanetarios captados por el primer gran programa de ALMA, conocido como DSHARP (Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project, proyecto de subestructuras del disco con gran resolución angular). Se trata de un proyecto centrado en la observación que incluyó horas de datos recopilados durante varios meses. El equipo de investigación obtuvo imágenes de veinte discos protoplanetarios cercanos con el fin de comprender más acerca de las primeras etapas de formación planetaria, y acaba de publicarse la asombrosa cantidad de datos del proyecto.
Durante mucho tiempo se pensó que era probable que los sistemas planetarios tuvieran su origen en los denominados discos protoplanetarios, círculos, espirales o elipses comprimidas de gas y polvo que se forman alrededor de protoestrellas en las primeras etapas de su desarrollo. Sin embargo, aún con comprendemos del todo el proceso por el cual surgen planetas de estos discos difusos. Es especialmente difícil entender las etapas tempranas de su evolución, cuando el polvo del disco se fusiona formando planetesimales y nacen las semillas de los planetas.
En astronomía se sabe que la primera etapa de crecimiento del planeta, donde pasa de ser granos individuales a un cuerpo de pocos kilómetros, debe suceder de manera muy rápida en términos astronómicos, pero la falta de datos observacionales ha hecho muy difícil determinar la física de este crecimiento. Afortunadamente, esto cambió hace poco gracias a la puesta en marcha de nuevos telescopios como ALMA.
Con el tiempo, los equipos de investigación en astronomía esperan ser capaces de predecir con exactitud qué tipo de sistema planetario evolucionará a partir de cualquier tipo de disco. El programa DSHARP nos acerca a este objetivo, proporcionando una vista detallada de las subestructuras (los variados patrones de círculos oscuros y claros y las espirales que se pueden ver en cada disco) que nos ayuda a entender su significado.
