Nuevas Oficinas Provisionales en las Oficinas Centrales de ESO
ESO ha crecido significativamente desde 1980, cuando su personal europeo primero se cambió desde sus oficinas en CERN al edificio dedicado a sus oficinas centrales en Garching, cerca de Munich, Alemania. En las tres décadas intermedias el número de estados miembros de ESO ha aumentado de seis a catorce, y la organización ha logrado hitos tales como la Primera Luz del New Technology Telescope en La Silla y del Very Large Telescope en Paranal, llegando a ser durante el proceso el observatorio más productivo del mundo. Hoy, ESO está construyendo el Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array en Chajnantor en colaboración con socios internacionales, y está en la fase del diseño detallado de un European Extremely Large Telescope de 42 metros, que será “el ojo más grande del mundo hacia el cielo”.
A través de los años, la cantidad del personal de ESO que trabaja en Garching ha aumentado de alrededor de 100 a unos 450, ya que la organización ha crecido y abordado estos apasionantes proyectos nuevos. Cuando la capacidad del edificio de las oficinas centrales se vio excedida se hizo necesario arrendar espacio adicional de oficinas en otras partes en el campus de investigación del Garching Forschungszentrum.
Un nuevo desarrollo durante el verano de 2010 es la construcción de varios edificios nuevos de oficinas provisorias, vistos a la izquierda en esta fotografía, que están inmediatamente adyacentes a las oficinas principales (a la derecha). Estos edificios hacen posible traer más personal ESO de Garching desde sus oficinas diseminadas alrededor del campus hacia la locación de las oficinas centrales, para que la gente pueda trabajar junta más fácilmente. Está planificado construir un nuevo edificio permanente para oficinas y lugares de reunión contiguo a las oficinas centrales originales.
