Ministro de Ciencia de Chile visita el Observatorio Paranal de ESO

El 10 y 11 de agosto, el ministro de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación de Chile, Flavio Salazar, visitó el Observatorio Paranal de ESO. Esta es la primera visita del nuevo ministro a un sitio de observación de ESO y su objetivo es fortalecer las relaciones entre ESO y Chile. Además, la instancia fue una excelente oportunidad para que el ministro se familiarizara con las operaciones e instalaciones.
Xavier Barcons, director general de ESO, Luis Chavarría, representante de ESO en Chile y Andreas Kaufer, director de operaciones de ESO, fueron los encargados de recibir al ministro. La visita comenzó con un recorrido por el Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO seguido por diferentes edificios de apoyo del observatorio.
Xavier Barcons señaló: “Chile ha sido un Estado anfitrión y socio de ESO por casi 60 años, por lo que nos honra recibir al ministro de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación en nuestras instalaciones en Paranal. Es una oportunidad para explorar maneras de fortalecer la colaboración internacional en beneficio de la comunidad científica chilena y de ESO”.
“La astronomía es un área muy desarrollada, nuestro país tiene una concentración de instrumentos astronómicos muy importantes —quizás la mayor del hemisferio Sur— y una masa crítica de investigadores muy potentes. Nosotros queremos articular esto, darle una continuidad y para ello un elemento clave es la internacionalización de la ciencia, porque son centros internacionales de mucho interés global. Vamos a seguir promoviendo su articulación, organización y el financiamiento de nuevos talentos en esas áreas,” dijo el ministro de Ciencia, Flavio Salazar.
La estrecha relación de colaboración entre ESO y Chile ha permitido a la organización operar sitios de observación pioneros en el país y, a través de las décadas, ha fomentado el crecimiento de la comunidad astronómica local.
El ministro, Flavio Salazar, también visitó Cerro Armazones, a unos 20 km de Paranal, lugar en que se encuentran en desarrollo las obras del Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de ESO. Se espera que la primera luz del ELT se pueda observar hacia fines de esta década. Será el ojo más grande del mundo para mirar el cielo y explorar el Universo con un nivel de detalle sin precedentes.
El representante de ESO, Luis Chavarría, indicó: “La visita del ministro es un hito importante y una oportunidad para compartir nuestra visión sobre los desafíos que representa operar de manera sustentable infraestructura de la magnitud de la del ELT. Aprovechar al máximo el laboratorio natural que entregan los excepcionales cielos del norte de Chile requiere una gran coordinación con diferentes instituciones de índole nacional y regional”.
