La energía verde llega a La Silla

Se realiza ceremonia para celebrar inauguración de central solar que proporcionará energía limpia al observatorio de ESO

ESO y la empresa Enel Green Power tienen el orgullo de anunciar la puesta en servicio de la central solar fotovoltaica de La Silla, en el norte de Chile. Para conmemorar el evento, se realizó una ceremonia inaugural en el Gimnasio La Silla, lugar que brinda una buena vista hacia la nueva planta.

Su Excelencia Máximo Pacheco Matte, Ministro de Energía de la República de Chile, pronunció el discurso inaugural, seguido por Fernando Comerón, Representante de ESO en Chile y Salvatore Bernabei, Encargado de Energías Renovables de Enel en Latinoamérica.

El Director General de ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, recalcó la importancia de estas instalaciones para ESO: “Esta nueva central significará un gran aporte a los esfuerzos que ESO realiza para maximizar el uso sustentable de recursos en sus instalaciones. Parece sumamente apropiado que un observatorio astronómico capte su energía directamente de la luz del Sol, y estoy encantado de agradecer a todos quienes hicieron posible este proyecto”.

Bautizada con el nombre del Observatorio La Silla, esta nueva central solar fotovoltaica (PV) proporcionará energía limpia al observatorio astronómico, mediante un acuerdo de compra de energía. En La Silla, ESO opera dos de los telescopios de 4 metros más productivos del mundo y algunos de los asistentes visitaron el observatorio luego de la ceremonia, acompañados por Fernando Comerón, Representante de ESO en Chile, Andreas Kaufer, Director del Observatorio La Silla-Paranal y astrónomos de ESO.

La capacidad total de la nueva central es de 1,7 MW. La energía anual suministrada será de aproximadamente 4,75 GWh, que se agregarán al Sistema Interconectado Central de Chile (SIC). La energía anual suministrada por la central solar equivale a las necesidades energéticas de 2000 hogares aproximadamente, y a más del 50% del consumo anual de energía del observatorio. La energía limpia generada por la central evitará la emisión de más de 2000 toneladas de CO2.

Desde que se firmó el convenio en el año 2014, los ingenieros y trabajadores han debido enfrentar las duras condiciones del desierto de Atacama en Chile, para instalar la planta. La instalación combina módulos PV convencionales con módulos bifaciales que capturan la energía solar desde ambos lados del panel fotovoltaico, como también módulos inteligentes, que emplean un microchip para permitir que cada panel proporcione energía eléctrica, independientemente de cualquier falla que pudiera afectar a los otros paneles. Este enfoque aumenta en un 5-10% la generación de energía total, en comparación a una central tradicional de similar tamaño. Los resultados tempranos que han arrojado las pruebas confirman este cálculo.

La instalación del parque solar de La Silla forma parte del programa Green ESO (ESO verde), una serie de medidas ambiciosas que ESO ha iniciado para reducir los impactos medioambientales de sus operaciones. Mirando al futuro, ESO pretende lograr que las fuentes de energía sustentables sean compatibles transversalmente en todas sus instalaciones, incluyendo Cerro Armazones, en las cercanías de Paranal, que será el lugar de emplazamiento del futuro European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). El Gobierno de Chile tiene como objetivo aumentar la cuota de energía proveniente de fuentes de energía renovable no convencionales en Chile, para alcanzar un 25% en el año 2020, con una meta posible de un 30% en el 2030.
