Astronautas visitan Chile como parte de las celebraciones de los 50 años de ESO
Charlas públicas de los astronautas Claude Nicollier y Pedro Duque son parte de las actividades culturales que ofrecerán Embajadas de los países miembros.

El martes 29 de octubre, el astronauta español de la Agencia Espacial Europea, Pedro Duque, será el invitado de honor del encuentro “Ciencia y arte, 50 años de ESO en Chile”. Dicha actividad dará inicio a las diversas celebraciones culturales con que el Observatorio Europeo Austral (ESO) y las Embajadas en Chile de los 15 Estados Miembros de la Organización han querido festejar el 50 Aniversario de ESO en Chile y su contribución clave a la astronomía en el mundo (ver los 10 Principales Descubrimientos Astronómicos de ESO)
La actividad con Pedro Duque, quien ha viajado al espacio en dos oportunidades, será a las 19:30 horas en el Centro Cultural de España y es organizada por la Embajada de ese país. Pedro Duque conversará con Enrique Rivera, Presidente de la Corporación Chilena de Video y Director de la Bienal de Artes Mediales.
“En estos 50 años, el Gobierno de Chile y ESO han logrado construir un puente científico y cultural entre Chile y Europa. Esta colaboración ha sido clave para hacer posible que tanto Europa como Chile alcancen el lugar que hoy ocupan en el panorama de la astronomía mundial. Deseamos seguir profundizando esta relación y estamos seguros que con desafíos como la próxima construcción del Telescopio Europeo Extremadamente Grande (E-ELT) lo lograremos, dijo Fernando Comerón, Representante de ESO en Chile.
Por su parte, la Embajada de Suiza en Chile ha organizado un encuentro con Claude Nicollier, astronauta suizo de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA), que se realizará el 2 de diciembre a las 16:00 horas. En el encuentro, relatará sus caminatas espaciales durante sus cuatro viajes al espacio y discutirá los beneficios y desafíos del telescopio espacial Hubble. La charla será en la Universidad Andrés Bello.
En el marco de esta conmemoración, el Embajador de la Unión Europea en Chile, Rafael Dochao afirmó que, “ESO es la organización intergubernamental de ciencia y tecnología de mayor importancia en la astronomía mundial. Por esta razón y para celebrar estos fructíferos 50 años en Chile, estamos festejando a través de diversas actividades. Además, vamos a fomentar una de las grandes labores de ESO, mediante nuestra cooperación con ESO en la investigación científica y su difusión al gran público. Esperamos que los próximos 50 años este puente de ciencia y de cultura entre Chile y Europa se fortalezca”.
Durante su visita a Chile ambos astronautas conocerán el Very Large Telescope (VLT), el instrumento óptico más avanzado del mundo ubicado en Cerro Paranal, en el desierto de Atacama, en el Norte de Chile.
“La relación entre ESO y Chile es un ejemplo de los grandes logros que se pueden alcanzar gracias a la colaboración internacional. A través de ESO hemos fortalecido los lazos en el ámbito científico y en la astro-ingeniería con cada uno de los Estados miembros que conforman esta Organización. Nos sumamos a los festejos de este 50 aniversario y reiteramos nuestro compromiso con la protección de los cielos de Chile para la exploración del cosmos”, indicó el Embajador Gabriel Rodríguez, del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, durante el lanzamiento oficial de estos eventos.
