Devolución del Telescopio de 2,2 metros
El telescopio continuará operativo para los usuarios de la Sociedad Max Planck

A partir del 1 de octubre de 2013, la comunidad de ESO ya no tendrá acceso al telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros, instalado en el Observatorio La Silla en Chile. Hasta ahora, el telescopio era operado por ESO y sus instalaciones se encontraban disponibles para toda su comunidad, así como para los usuarios de la Sociedad Max Planck (MPG, por sus siglas en inglés). En el futuro ESO ya no ofrecerá el telescopio a sus usuarios, aunque la Sociedad Max Planck continuará empleándolo. El telescopio y sus instrumentos también eran puestos a disposición de los astrónomos chilenos, lo que se mantendrá sin cambios.
El telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros fue construido originalmente por el Instituto Max Planck de Astronomía (Heidelberg, Alemania) con la intención de ser ubicado en Namibia. Finalmente no fue emplazado en este lugar, por lo que más tarde se ofreció a ESO bajo un acuerdo en el que la organización instalaría el telescopio en el Observatorio La Silla en Chile (realizado en 1983) y se convertiría en la responsable de su posterior operación.
Durante un período de treinta años, el telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros se ha empleado para producir ciencia de vanguardia, incluyendo innovadoras investigaciones acerca del resplandor posterior a los estallidos de rayos gamma, las explosiones más poderosas del Universo.
Al igual que con su instrumentación actual: la cámara WFI (Wide Field Imager, Cámara de gran campo), el muy usado espectrógrafo FEROS, y el sistema de detección de explosiones de rayos gamma GROND; el telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros también albergó la primera cámara infrarroja de uso común proporcionada por ESO, el sistema IRAC, instalada en 1988. Todos los datos obtenidos con el telescopio estarán disponibles más adelante a través del Archivo Científico de ESO.
El telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros, especialmente cuando se utiliza en conjunto con su Wide Field Imager (WFI), también ha sido una de las instalaciones más productivas a la hora de generar hermosas imágenes que ESO ha publicado como foto noticias (más de 20 de las 100 mejores imágenes de ESO fueron producidas usando este telescopio y su cámara). ESO seguirá creando imágenes a partir de datos obtenidos por el WFI en los próximos años, basándose en la información recopilada durante este tiempo. La fotografía más reciente muestra los brillantes cúmulos estelares NGC 2547 (eso1317) y NGC 3766 (eso1326).
