SAURON recibe el 'Group Achievement Award 2013' de la Real Sociedad de Astronomía
Tres miembros del personal de ESO y un ex investigador asociado de la organización están entre los integrantes del equipo

La Real Sociedad de Astronomía del Reino Unido (RAS, por sus siglas en inglés) ha adjudicado el 'RAS "A" Group Award 2013' al equipo encargado del proyecto SAURON, el que contó con la colaboración de Tim de Zeeuw, Harald Kuntschner y Eric Emsellem de ESO, y de Davor Krajnović, uno de los investigadores asociados del Observatorio. Este galardón al mérito grupal otorga un reconocimiento a aquellos equipos que se han destacado por su contribución a la astronomía. El premio fue presentado en la Reunión Nacional de Astronomía del Reino Unido, en St Andrews, Escocia, el 3 de julio de 2013.
SAURON es un espectrógrafo de campo integral con un campo visual de 33 x 44 arcosegundos, construido de acuerdo a requerimientos específicos en el Observatorio de Lyon, para el Telescopio William Herschel (WHT) de 4,2 metros, ubicado en el Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos en la isla de La Palma, España. El objetivo científico específico del equipo que desarrolló el proyecto SAURON fue entender la evolución de las galaxias elípticas, realizando observaciones detalladas de una selección de objetos cercanos.
La iniciativa SAURON combina un diseño instrumental optimizado, minuciosos métodos de análisis y creación de modelos científicos para interpretar los resultados, además de un alto grado de organización en todo el trabajo que se realiza de manera colaborativa. El equipo a cargo de SAURON se centró en la observación de una muestra representativa de 72 galaxias de tipo temprano (galaxias elípticas, lenticulares y espirales Sa). El proyecto ATLAS3D continuó y amplió esta labor, analizando una muestra de 260 galaxias elípticas y lenticulares en un volumen delimitado del Universo.
Los aspectos más destacados del proyecto SAURON incluyen: el hallazgo de una evidente correlación entre la relación masa-luz y la dispersión de velocidades vinculada al contenido de materia oscura de las galaxias de tipo temprano; la constatación de que el gas caliente presente en una parte considerable de las galaxias de tipo temprano debe tener un origen externo; una nueva clasificación cinemática de las galaxias de tipo temprano basada en una variable sustitutiva del momento angular específico que indica que los rotores más lentos son físicamente distintos a los más rápidos y una clara demostración de que las poblaciones estelares jóvenes son más frecuentes en galaxias de tipo temprano con una masa menor y una rotación más veloz.
SAURON es un instrumento privado que forma parte del Telescopio William Herschel desde 1999, y aún es utilizado por científicos del Reino Unido, los Países Bajos y España. Está abierto a toda la comunidad en un contexto de colaboración.
