Massimo Tarenghi, galardonado con el Premio Tycho Brahe 2013

La Sociedad Astronómica Europea (EAS, European Astronomical Society) ha entregado el Premio Tycho Brahe 2013 a Massimo Tarenghi, por su vital aporte en el desarrollo de las instalaciones del Observatorio Europeo Austral, las que han permitido que Europa se encuentre hoy a la vanguardia de la astronomía terrestre a nivel mundial.
Este galardón se otorga en reconocimiento a logros excepcionales en el uso y desarrollo de los instrumentos europeos, homenajeando además a los innovadores descubrimientos que se realizan gracias a ellos. El trabajo de Tarenghi ha permitido la implementación de una serie de nuevas técnicas y metodologías para la observación astronómica que han cambiado antiguos paradigmas.
A lo largo de 35 de los 50 años de historia de ESO, Massimo Tarenghi ha participado en distintos roles de vital importancia para el desarrollo de la organización, hasta alcanzar su actual estatus como un gran complejo de múltiples sitios para la observación astronómica, líder en todo el mundo. Parte de ESO desde 1979, se desempeñó como Project Scientist, y más tarde como Gerente de proyecto para el Telescopio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros, construido y operado por ESO en La Silla. Este telescopio aún se encuentra en funcionamiento y, junto al Wide Field Imager o cámara de gran campo, es responsable de muchos de los programas de rastreo, así como de increíbles imágenes reconocidas por los astrónomos de todo el planeta.
Posteriormente, Tarenghi fue nombrado Gerente de proyecto para el New Technology Telescope (NTT). Él y su equipo implementaron el uso de la óptica activa, obteniendo espectaculares resultados desde la primera luz, por lo que el NTT abrió un nuevo camino para los telescopios del futuro. El uso de tecnología óptica relativamente liviana y controlada computacionalmente, sobre una montura altazimutal, se convertiría más tarde en el punto de partida para el proyecto del Very Large Telescope de ESO, para el cual se designó a Tarenghi como Gerente de proyecto en 1988. Lograr la culminación de este gran y complejo proyecto requirió una dedicada y enérgica gestión. Pero más allá del desarrollo de un novedoso y revolucionario conjunto de telescopios, Tarenghi también fue una pieza fundamental en la creación de un observatorio totalmente nuevo en Cerro Paranal, convirtiéndose en su primer director.
Durante el desarrollo del proyecto internacional Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, Tarenghi ocupó una serie de altos cargos, entre ellos Director Interino y Gerente Interino de Proyecto, en 2003 fue nombrado Director, función que desempeñó hasta el año 2008. Siendo designado Representante legal en Chile en diciembre de 2008, Tarenghi pudo nuevamente ejercer cierta influencia en los acontecimientos futuros, preparando el camino en este país para la posterior selección del sitio que albergaría al European Extremely Large Telescope, la que finalmente se llevó a cabo en 2010.
El Premio Tycho Brahe es financiado por la Fundación Klaus Tschira, creada por el físico Klaus Tschira en 1995 como una organización sin fines de lucro. Su principal objetivo es apoyar proyectos en las áreas de ciencias naturales, matemáticas y ciencias de la computación, sensibilizando al público y aumentando así la valoración de estos campos.
