Nuevo film: ALMA — En búsqueda de nuestros orígenes cósmicos

Con motivo de la inauguración del Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array (ALMA) [1], el 13 de marzo de 2013, ESO, junto a sus socios internacionales, lanzó una nueva película titulada 'ALMA — En búsqueda de nuestros orígenes cósmicos'. Este video de 16 minutos presenta la historia de ALMA desde los orígenes del proyecto hace varias décadas atrás, hasta los primeros resultados científicos recientemente obtenidos.

El film posee dramáticas tomas captadas en helicóptero y una banda sonora que incorpora expresivas melodías compuestas especialmente por Toomas Erm (ESO). La película te lleva en un viaje hacia el hogar de ALMA en el llano de Chajnantor, a una altura de 5.000 metros, en el entorno único del desierto de Atacama en Chile.

El rodaje relata la historia del proyecto desde sus inicios, cuando Europa, Norteamérica y Asia del Este desarrollaron un concepto común para un nuevo telescopio gigante, que permitiría realizar observaciones a longitudes de onda milimétricas y submilimétricas y captar así los objetos más fríos y distantes del Universo. Además, sigue la búsqueda de la ubicación perfecta y los desafíos técnicos y logísticos que presentó la construcción de una infraestructura de tal envergadura en un lugar remoto y en condiciones extremadamente adversas.

El film también incluye tomas detalladas de la fascinante y compleja tecnología de la que depende ALMA, y explica cómo las 66 antenas se instalaron en la llanura desértica a miles de metros de altura. Asimismo, entrega una visión de los emocionantes avances científicos que éste, el telescopio más potente de su clase, proporcionará. Los primeros resultados científicos, obtenidos incluso antes de que las instalaciones estuviesen completamente operativas, ya están cumpliendo estas expectativas.
