Entrega del último Front End de ALMA

La llegada del componente europeo pone fin a otra fase en la construcción de ALMA

El último sistema Front End para el Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array (ALMA) ha sido entregado al Centro de Apoyo a las Operaciones (OSF, por sus siglas en inglés) en Chile, marcando un nuevo hito en el proceso de culminación del proyecto. Con un sistema instalado en cada una de las 66 antenas de ALMA, los Front Ends son el primer paso de una larga cadena de dispositivos que reciben, convierten, procesan y registran los datos astronómicos recopilados por el telescopio. Cada Front End contiene un conjunto de receptores extremadamente sensibles, que se enfrían a temperaturas de tan sólo cuatro grados por encima del cero absoluto (-269 grados Celsius). Estos receptores detectan la luz en longitudes de onda milimétricas y submilimétricas que ALMA puede "ver".

La construcción de estos componentes de ALMA ha sido una labor compartida entre los socios del proyecto, tanto de Europa como de Estados Unidos y Asia del Este. Veintiséis de un total de 70 unidades fueron construidas en el Centro de Integración del Front End en Europa, con sede en el Laboratorio Rutherford Appleton (RAL, por sus siglas en inglés) en el Reino Unido (incluyendo esta última entrega). Estas 26 unidades son productos finales entregados por ESO, como el socio europeo del proyecto ALMA.

"Los sistemas de receptores Front End de última generación son cruciales para el buen funcionamiento de ALMA. El laboratorio RAL, como anfitrión del Centro de Integración del Front End en Europa (EuFEIC, por sus siglas en inglés) a nombre de ESO, se encuentra complacido de haber entregado a Chile el Front End número 70, el último del proyecto. A pesar de haber comenzado después que sus contrapartes en Asia Oriental y América del Norte, el EuFEIC mejoró su tasa de producción durante el año 2012 para terminar a tiempo sus entregas y esta importante fase en el proceso de construcción de ALMA", dijo Brian Ellison, coordinador británico del proyecto ALMA.

Al llegar al sitio de ALMA, el Front End será nuevamente sometido a pruebas de verificación en el OSF. La aceptación formal por parte del observatorio representará el cese de las actividades del Centro de Integración del Front End europeo, y del proyecto de construcción del Front End de ALMA en su totalidad. El observatorio ALMA será inaugurado oficialmente el 13 de marzo (véase aviso de prensa ann12092).

La construcción y las operaciones de ALMA a nombre de Europa se encuentran a cargo de ESO, a nombre de Norteamérica son responsabilidad del Observatorio Radio Astronómico Nacional (NRAO), y a nombre de Asia del Este corresponden al Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Japón (NAOJ). El Observatorio ALMA (Joint ALMA Observatory, JAO) es el responsable de la unificación del proyecto, por lo que está a cargo de la dirección general y la gestión de la construcción, así como de la puesta en marcha y las operaciones del observatorio.
