ESO sigue siendo, con diferencia, el observatorio basado en tierra más productivo del mundo

Igualado con el telescopio espacial Hubble en estadística de publicaciones anuales

Durante el año 2011, los astrónomos han utilizado datos observacionales de los telescopios e instrumentos de ESO para redactar un total de 783 artículos referenciados. Se trata de un máximo histórico para ESO, que sigue siendo, con diferencia, el observatorio basado en tierra más productivo del mundo. A lo largo de los últimos años el número de artículos que utilizan observaciones de ESO ha sido casi idéntico al de los publicados con observaciones hechas con el Telescopio Espacial Hubble de la NASA/ESA, aumentando rápidamente en ambos casos tras un ligero descenso en 2009.

Sólo el VLT/VLTI proporcionó datos para 551 artículos en 2011, un incremento de cerca del 8% desde 2010. El número total de artículos que han utilizado datos de VLT/VLTI supera ampliamente los 4.000. Los artículos que usan datos obtenidos de los archivos de ESO  han supuesto una fracción fija del 12% durante los últimos años, con un fuerte incremento en 2011.

Incuso si excluimos del total la contribución del buque insignia de ESO (el conjunto de telescopios VLT/VLTI) destaca el hecho de que, el resto de telescopios de Paranal y  La Silla, generan cada año un número de artículos similar al producido por el siguiente observatorio basado en tierra más productivo, el Observatorio W. M. Keck.

Si echamos un vistazo más de cerca a algunos de los instrumentos de VLT, descubrimos algunos patrones interesantes. Los instrumentos más productivo de VLT en cuanto a publicación de artículos, siguen siendo FORS2 y UVES. Instrumentos nuevos como HAWK-I y X-shooter han aumentado su número de publicaciones rápidamente. El instrumento más productivo de La Silla es el espectrógrafo cazador de planetas HARPS.

Estos números se extraen de la Bibliografía de Telescopios de ESO (telbib), una base de datos de publicaciones con referencias que usan datos de ESO [1]. Telbib conecta artículos publicados con los programas de observación que generaron los datos. Lo mantiene el equipo de bibliotecarios de ESO. Pueden encontrar una descripción detallada de la base de datos telbib en: http://telbib.eso.org/help.html.

También pueden encontrar gráficas interactivas de estadísticas seleccionadas en: http://telbib.eso.org/telbibstats/. Estas gráficas muestran todos los contenidos de la base de datos telbib para publicaciones hechas desde 1996 hasta la actualidad. Pueden usarse para estudiar el desarrollo de los artículos científicos utilizando datos obtenidos por la instrumentación de ESO, el uso de datos de archivo o el porcentaje de autores y programas de ESO en los artículos.

Mirando un poco hacia el pasado, a lo largo del periodo que comienza en 1996, aproximadamente unos 12.000 autores individuales de cerca de 90 países han publicado más de 8.500 artículos científicos utilizando datos de ESO.
