Een windvlaag uit een zwart gat
Op een afstand van ongeveer 70 miljoen lichtjaar van de aarde in het sterrenbeeld Grus (Kraanvogel), vind je het sterrenstelsel NGC 7582 - een spiraalstelsel met in de kern een superzwaar zwart gat. De foto’s hier zijn gemaakt als onderdeel van een onderzoek waarbij gebruik gemaakt is van het MUSE-instrument van ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) om de invloed van een actief zwart gat op de vorming van sterren in het melkwegstelsel te ontsluieren.
Het sterrenstelsel bevat een actieve galactische kern (AGN) - een extreem energierijke centrale motor die wordt aangedreven door het superzware zwarte gat dat materie uit zijn directe omgeving opslokt. De materie warmt op in dit proces, waarbij enorme hoeveelheden energie en krachtige winden in de omgeving vrij komen. Maar welk effect heeft dit op het melkwegstelsel in als geheel?
Om daar achter te komen, bekeek een recent onderzoek, geleid door Stéphanie Juneau van NOIRLab in de VS, de verdeling van verschillende geïoniseerde elementen in het stelsel. De afbeelding rechts toont zuurstof in blauw, stikstof in groen en waterstof in rood. De rood oplichtende gebieden zijn gebieden met een hoge stervormingsactiviteit, terwijl de dominant blauwe gebieden de materie laten zien die in de vorm van een kegel uitstroomt uit de AGN. De afbeelding aan de linkerkant, die hetzelfde gebied bestrijkt, toont een meer klassiek beeld van dit sterrenstelsel, met stofbanen die blauw en oranje sterlicht verduisteren.
MUSE stelde het team ook in staat om de beweging van de sterren en het gas in kaart te brengen. Ze ontdekten dat NGC 7582 mogelijk een structuur heeft die het centrale superzware zwarte gat omringt en de rest van het stelsel afschermt van de intensieve uitstroom van energie uit de AGN en deze ervan wegleidt in de vorm van een extreem krachtige wind.
