Niet de moeder van meteorieten
Het gebied tussen Mars en Jupiter krioelt van de rotsachtige objecten genaamd planetoïden. Naar schatting bevat deze planetoïdengordel miljoenen kleine rotsblokken en 1,1 tot 1,9 miljoen grotere exemplaren die een diameter hebben van meer dan een kilometer. Vaak vallen kleinere fragmenten van deze hemellichamen als meteorieten op de aarde. Interessant weetje: 34% van alle meteorieten gevonden op aarde behoren tot één bepaald type: H-chondrieten. Verondersteld wordt dat deze afkomstig zijn van een gemeenschappelijke ouder – een mogelijke kandidaat is de planetoïde 6 Hebe die hier op de foto te zien is.
Ongeveer 186 kilometer in diameter en genoemd naar de Griekse godin van de jeugd was 6 Hebe de zesde planetoïde die ooit ontdekt werd. Deze opnamen werden gemaakt tijdens een studie van de miniwereld met het SPHERE-instrument op de Very Large Telescope van ESO die de veronderstelling dat 6 Hebe de oorsprong is van H-chondrieten onderzoekt.
Uit observaties reconstrueerden astronomen een simulatie van de rotatie en de 3D-vorm van 6 Hebe, en gebruikten dit 3D-model om het volume van de grootste instulping op 6 Hebe te bepalen – waarschijnlijk een inslagkrater van een botsing waardoor veel meteorieten ontstaan zijn. Het volume van de instulping is echter vijf keer kleiner dan het totale volume van nabijgelegen planetoïdenfamilies met een H-chondrietensamenstelling, wat doet vermoeden dat 6 Hebe waarschijnlijk toch niet de oorsprong van H-chondrieten is.
