Goed op weg: de ALMA-Residencia
De Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) bevindt zich hoog op de Chajnantor-hoogvlakte in Chili. De bouwwerken van ALMA gingen in 2008 van start en de eerste opname gebeurde in 2011. Tot nu toe moesten de astronomen, ingenieurs en technici die op de site werken in tijdelijke containers wonen die in het basiskamp stonden. Ze zullen blij zijn te vernemen dat aan deze situatie weldra een einde komt, aangezien de bouwwerken van de nieuwe ALMA-Residencia het eindstadium bereiken.
Toen al de antennes met succes op de hoogvlakte geïnstalleerd waren, begonnen in het begin van 2015 de werkzaamheden voor de Residencia. Gelegen bij de Operations Support Facility (OSF) op 3.000 meter hoogte, ligt het ongeveer 30 kilometer van ALMA vandaan en meer dan 2.000 meter lager. De ALMA-site is gevestigd in het Andesgebergte op 5.000 meter hoogte. Het OSF, waar alle wetenschappelijke activiteiten gecoördineerd worden, de dagelijkse werkzaamheden geschieden en dat als een draaischijf dienst doet voor alle aannemers, fungeert als basiskamp voor ALMA.
Deze afbeelding toont het onlangs voltooide hoofdgebouw van de Residencia met een voorgevel die zorgvuldig ontworpen werd om een harmonieus geheel te vormen met de kleuren en topologie van het omringende woestijnlandschap. De werkzaamheden werden uitgevoerd door lokale Chileense aannemers die ervaring hebben met de barre en afgelegen locatie: Constructora L y D S.A. en Axis Desarrollos Constructivos S.A. die samen het Axis LyD consortium vormen. De bouw van de Residencia werd gefinancierd door ESO (80%) met een financiële bijdrage van Oost-Azië (20%).
Nu dient enkel nog het binnenwerk te gebeuren om de Residencia verder in te richten. Het gebouw huisvest faciliteiten zoals een cafetaria, bibliotheek, lounge, wellnesscentrum met fitnessruimte, zwembad, en 120 kamers voor het personeel van ALMA.
