Cluster MACS J1149.5+2223

Deze foto toont de enorme cluster van sterrenstelsels MACS J1149.5+2223, waarvan het licht er meer dan 5 miljard jaar over heeft gedaan om ons te bereiken. De enorme massa van de cluster buigt het licht van verder weg gelegen objecten af. Door dit zwaartekrachtlenseffect is het licht van deze objecten versterkt en vervormd. Ditzelfde effect veroorzaakt ook meervoudige afbeeldingen van verre objecten.
