Bayerischer Minister für Wissenschaft und Kunst besucht ESO-Hauptsitz.

Heute besuchte der bayerische Minister für Wissenschaft und Kunst, Bernd Sibler, den Hauptsitz der ESO in Garching bei München, Deutschland. Minister Sibler wurde von Rolf-Dieter Jungk, Amtschef im Bayerischen Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst, und einer kleinen Delegation begleitet, die den aktuellen COVID-19-Beschränkungen entsprach. Der Besuch bot dem Minister und seiner Delegation die Gelegenheit, mehr über die ESO und ihre Spitzenforschung und -technologie zu erfahren.
Die Besucher trafen sich mit dem Generaldirektor der ESO, Xavier Barcons, der Präsidentin des Rates der ESO, Linda Tacconi, der Verwaltungsdirektorin der ESO, Claudia Burger, dem Direktor für Wissenschaft der ESO, Rob Ivison, und dem stellvertretenden Leiter des Büros des Generaldirektors der ESO, Nikolaj Gube.
Nach einer Präsentation des Generaldirektors über die ESO und ihre Aktivitäten erhielten Minister Sibler und seine Delegation einen Rundgang durch die Einrichtungen am Standort Garching, einschließlich eines Stopps am Besucherfenster der Integrationshalle der ESO. Hier werden einige der Komponenten für die Teleskope, darunter auch für das kommende Extremely Large Telescope der ESO, vorbereitet und getestet.
Später erhielt die Delegation eine Führung durch das Supernova-Planetarium und Besucherzentrum der ESO, das den Besuchern durch die Präsentation von ESO-spezifischen wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen, Projekten und technologischen Durchbrüchen ein intensives Erlebnis der Astronomie bietet. Von seinem Sitz im süddeutschen Bundesland Bayern aus begeistert und inspiriert die ESO Supernova seit 2018 die nächste Generation von Wissenschaftlern. Es bietet interaktive Planetariumsshows, Workshops und Führungen, die für alle Altersgruppen geeignet sind und dem bayerischen Lehrplan für Mathematik und Physik folgen.
Generaldirektor der ESO Xavier Barcons sagte: „Ich freue mich sehr, Herrn Minister Sibler in der ESO-Zentrale in Garching bei München zu begrüßen, das seit über 40 Jahren die Heimat der Organisation in Bayern ist. Hier entwirft und entwickelt die ESO Teleskope und Instrumente, die weltweit führend sind, und bringt der Öffentlichkeit die Astronomie durch die ESO Supernova näher. Wir freuen uns darauf, die wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit unseren vielen Partnern im Freistaat Bayern auch in den kommenden Jahrzehnten fortzusetzen."
Wissenschaftsminister Bernd Sibler sagte: „Die Bandbreite der wissenschaftlichen Leistungen, die hier am Hauptsitz der Europäischen Südsternwarte erbracht werden, ist mehr als beeindruckend. Denn hier wird nicht nur durch die Entwicklung und den Bau zentraler Teile für die leistungsfähigsten bodengebundenen Teleskope auf der ganzen Welt astronomische Spitzenforschung ermöglicht. Mit dem ‚ESO Supernova Planetarium & Besucherzentrum‘ werden darüber hinaus hochabstrakte wissenschaftliche Inhalte anschaulich und faszinierend für die Öffentlichkeit aufbereitet. So geht moderne Wissenschaftskommunikation. Auch das ist ein wichtiger Verdienst von ESO-Generaldirektor Xavier Barcons sowie allen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern hier in Garching. Dass dieses so vielseitig und modern ausgerichtete, internationale wissenschaftliche Zentrum bei uns im Freistaat angesiedelt ist, ist ein Beleg für die hervorragenden Rahmenbedingungen, die internationale Spitzenwissenschaft in Bayern vorfindet.“
