Ins neue Jahr mit einem Knall
Überall auf der Welt wird das neue Jahr mit einem Feuerwerk begrüßt. Wir haben uns gedacht, dass wir Ihnen unser eigenes Feuerwerk zum Jahresbeginn 2024 präsentieren möchten. Das Bild, äh, Video der Woche ist eine Zeitrafferaufnahme des Nachthimmels über dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO auf dem Cerro Paranal in Chile. Wenn Sie genau hinsehen, entdecken Sie einen außerirdischen Feuerwerkskörper, den man auch als Meteor bezeichnet.
Meteore sind Objekte aus dem Weltraum, die beim Eintritt in die Erdatmosphäre mit hoher Geschwindigkeit verglühen. Sie werden im Deutschen oft als Sternschnuppen bezeichnet und bieten ein schillerndes Schauspiel, wenn sie durch die Atmosphäre fallen und sich dabei durch die Reibung mit der Luft aufheizen. In dieser Zeitrafferaufnahme vom Juni letzten Jahres hinterlässt der Meteor eine Rauchfahne, die sich langsam in der Atmosphäre verflüchtigt. Täglich fallen schätzungsweise 44 Tonnen Meteoriten auf die Erde – das entspricht der sechsfachen Menge der Feuerwerkskörper, die in der Silvesternacht im Hafen von Sydney gezündet werden.
Das Jahr 2023 markiert einen wichtigen Meilenstein für das VLT, unser Flaggschiff-Teleskop, das in diesem Jahr seinen 25. Geburtstag feierte. Mit vier 8,2-Meter-Einzelteleskopen, von denen zwei im Video zu sehen sind, und vier 1,8-Meter-Hilfsteleskopen, eines davon im Vordergrund zu sehen, ist das VLT ein außerordentlich scharfes Auge auf den Nachthimmel.
Was steht für 2024 auf dem Programm? Erwarten Sie weitere bahnbrechende Entdeckungen und einige aufregende Upgrades. Da das VLT weiterhin unser Wissen über das Universum vorantreibt, wird das Jahr 2024 wahrscheinlich voller kosmischer Entdeckungen und Fortschritte sein.
