Neue ALMA- und Paranal-Webcams

Am Very Large Telescope (VLT) und am Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) der ESO sind neue, hochauflösende Kameras installiert worden. Sie bieten rund um die Uhr einen interaktiven Einblick in den Betrieb der beiden vielleicht bekanntesten Observatorien in Chile und ergänzen somit die bereits existierenden Live-Webcams.
Die neuen Kameras ermöglichen einen 360°-Rundumblick auf alles, was an den Observatorien passiert. Sie können zur interaktiven Erkundung der Standorte genutzt werden und bieten gleichzeitig eine Auflösung, die viele Details erkennen lässt. Einige interessante Bereiche können in noch besonders hoher Auflösung abgerufen werden. Dazu zählt auch der Gipfel des Cerro Armazones in Chile – der zukünftige Standort des European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Die Konstruktion des weltweit größten optischen Teleskop, das 2024 fertig gestellt werden soll, kann also live verfolgt werden. Auch die kleineren Hilfsteleskope am Paranal und, an besonders klaren Tagen, der Vulkan Llullaillaco, der sich 190 km entfernt an der Grenze zwischen Chile und Argentinien befindet, können beobachtet werden. Am ALMA-Standort lassen sich die Antennen der ESO, von Nordamerika (USA und Kanada) sowie Ostasien (Japan, Taiwan und Korea) und im Hintergrund das APEX-Teleskop erkennen. Auch Naturwunder werden erfasst: der Licancabur-Schichtvulkan sowie die sägeblattartigen Formationen, die man als Büßereis bezeichnet, und die sich nur in den sehr großen Höhen wie denen des ALMA-Standorts bilden.
Die Kameras sind sehr empfindlich, so dass der Nachthimmel über dem Paranal oder über ALMA so wirkt, als würde man ihn direkt betrachten. Ab und zu ist auch der helle gelbe Laserstrahl der Adaptiven Optik des VLT, der in die Atmosphäre gerichtet ist, zu sehen.
Mithilfe der Kameras wird außerdem ein ganz neuer Beobachtungsbereich zugänglich: Die weltweit ersten Live-Observatorien-Beobachtungen an ALMA und dem Paranal werden in extrem scharfen 4k-Fischaugenbildern Planetarien rund um die Welt zur Verfügung gestellt. Dies wird auch am zukünftigen ESO Supernova Planetarium & Besucherzentrum zugänglich sein.
Die Kameras stammen von Apical. Apical ist ein Hochtechnologieunternehmen, das in Frankreich angesiedelt ist und sich auf innovative Lösungen für die Weitfeld- und hochauflösende Bildgebung sowie Netzwerkkonnektivität in besonders herausfordernden Orten spezialisiert haben.
