„Viele Hände machen der Arbeit bald ein Ende“ sagt ein altes Sprichwort, vielleicht wäre in diesem Fall die Phrase „viele Reifen machen der Arbeit bald ein Ende“ passender. Hier ist Otto abgebildet, einer der zwei ALMA-Transporter zusammen mit seiner Gefährtin Lore. Otto und Lore sind für den Transport der ALMA-Antennenschüsseln auf das Chajnantor-Plateau zuständig, einer Observatoriumsanlage auf 5000 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel im Norden Chiles. Seit dem Aufstellen der Antennen vor Ort haben die Trucks die zusätzliche Aufgabe, sie nach den Bedürfnissen der Wissenschaftler umzupositionieren. Otto kann in diesem Video in Aktion betrachtet werden.
Die zwei leistungsstarken Giganten sind die ultimativen maßgeschneiderten Vehikel. Sie wurden speziell für die ESO vom deutschen Fahrzeugbauer Scheuerle entwickelt, die eine beeindruckende Liste schwerer Transportfahrzeuge wie für die Antares-Rakete und eine Ölbohrplattform mit einem atemberaubenden Gewicht von 15.000 Tonnen vorweisen können!
Die Transporter sind bis auf die Farbe der Sicherheitsgeländer auf dem Fahrzeug identisch. Otto hat wie auf dem Bild zu sehen rote Geländer und Lore kann man an grünen Geländern identifizieren. Jedes Fahrzeug wird von zwei Dieselagaggregaten mit jeweils 700 PS also in Summe 1400 PS angetrieben. Beide Fahrzeuge können auch ferngesteuert werden und erlauben den Operateuren die Positionierung der Antennen mit Millimetergenauigkeit.
Die ALMA-Transporter sind ein integraler Bestandteil der ALMA-Anlage, so dass sie als Teil des Teleskops betrachtet werden können. Ohne die beiden Vehikel wäre der Bau, der Betrieb und die Aufrechterhaltung des Antennenfelds nicht möglich.
