Die ESO wird in diesem Jahr 50 Jahre alt, und um dieses wichtige Jubiläum zu feiern, werfen wir einen Blick in unsere Vergangenheit. Während des gesamten Jahres wird einmal pro Monat ein spezielles „Damals und Heute“-Bild der Woche illustrieren, wie sich die Dinge auf La Silla, am Paranal-Observatorium, in den ESO-Büros in Santiago de Chile und am Hauptsitz der ESO in Garching bei München über die Jahrzehnte verändert haben.

Auf dem Bildpaar in diesem Monat, aufgenommen jeweils am Paranal-Observatorium der ESO in der chilenischen Atacamawüste, vergleichen wir eine betriebsame Baustelle, wie sie im November 1999 zu sehen war, mit dem fertigen Bauwerk in der heutigen Zeit: das Wohngebäude des Observatoriums, bekannt unter dem Namen Residencia. Stellen Sie sich den Unterschied von damals zu heute vor: Das damalige Dröhnen der Hämmer und Bohrmaschinen und der Lärm von Traktoren und Kränen hat den Weg zu dem friedvollen Ort in der Wüste geebnet, der das fertige Bauwerk heute ist, das genaue Gegenteil seinen Umgebung. Aus natürlichen Materialien und Farben eingepasst in den Boden errichtet, verschmilzt das Gebäude in der Landschaft.

Die Residencia wurde als Refugium für Astronomen und andere Beschäftigte in einer der rauesten Landschaften gebaut, die man sich vorstellen kann, wo die extreme Trockenheit, intensive Ultraviolettstrahlung von der Sonne, starke Winde und große Höhe Teil des täglichen Lebens sind. Die Baufirmen, die die Residencia gebaut haben und die in diesen extremen Bedingungen arbeiten mussten, haben eine sehr geschätzte Oase für die Observatoriumsbelegschaft in der Wüste geschaffen, die Schutz vor den trockenen Umgebungsbedingungen bietet. Das fertiggestellte Gebäude ist ein Zeugnis ihrer harten Arbeit. Die preisgekrönte Residencia hat über 100 Zimmer, inklusive einiger öffentlicher Räume wie Kantine, Lounge, Schwimmbecken, Fitnesscenter und Bibliothek. Sie bietet von der westlichen Fassade spektakuläre Aussichten über die Wüste in Richtung des Pazifischen Ozeans und zum Sonnenuntergang.

Eine weiteres Detail ist auf beiden Bildern sichtbar: Hinter der Residencia, auf 2600 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel, steht das Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO. Es ist das weltweit fortschrittlichste astronomische Observatorium für sichtbares Licht und der Grund dafür, warum die Residencia und alle diejenigen, die innerhalb seiner Mauern verweilen, dort überhaupt sind!
