ESO-Mitarbeiter unter den Preisträgern des Breakthrough Prize 2015

Auch ESO-Mitarbeiter sind unter den Mitgliedern der zwei Teams, die für ihre Entdeckung der beschleunigten Ausdehnung des Universums mit dem Breakthrough Prize 2015 für Grundlagenphysik ausgezeichnet wurden.
Am 9. November 2014 wurde der Breakthrough Prize 2015 [1] für Grundlagenphysik an das Supernova Cosmology Project und das High-z Supernova Project verliehen. Die Wissenschaftler werden für die unerwartete Entdeckung geehrt, dass die Expansion des Universums beschleunigt statt, wie lange angenommen, abgebremst wird. Diese Entdeckung war der Höhepunkt der Kosmologie des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts und hat den Boden für die aktuelle Ära der kosmologischen Forschung geebnet.
Der Preis beinhaltet eine Geldsumme von drei Millionen US-Dollar und wird zwischen den Teammitgliedern aufgeteilt. Die Nobelpreisträger Saul Perlmutter von der University of California, Berkley und dem Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory, Brian P. Schmidt von der Australian National University und Adam Riess von der Johns Hopkins University und dem Space Telescope Science Institute haben den Preis im Namen der beiden Gruppen angenommen.
Die Teams bestehen aus insgesamt 51 Mitgliedern [2], zu ihnen zählen auch Bruno Leibundgut und Jason Spyromilio von der ESO sowie die beiden ehemaligen ESO-Mitarbeiter Isobel Hook und Chris Lidman. Das New Technology Telescope und das 3,6-Meter Teleskop der ESO am La Silla-Observatorium der ESO haben eine wichtige Rolle bei den Arbeiten gespielt.
Die Preisverleihung wurde von Seth MacFarlane präsentiert, auch Kate Beckinsale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Diaz, Jon Hamm und Eddie Redmayne waren beteiligt. Die Zeremonie wird am 22. November 2014 in den BBC World News im Fernsehen gezeigt.
